Exclamation Beware! They're back!

Last year we had several forum dogs (Dora, Lola, & Tori come to mind) who tangled w/some pretty nasty weeds (foxtails, filaree, burrs, etc.) Right now, they are just beginning to grow here in SoCal and at this stage they are easy to pull and won't harm the dogs, yet... This morning I managed to fill a 5-gallon pail with these "nasties" from our mostly landscaped backyard and I've only covered about 1/2 the yard. I still have to get what's growing on the pool side. UGH! But, I wanted to give you all a head's up that "They're baaack!" so you can check your own yards.

Here's a link to the thread about Lola's encounter with the foxtails. There are many pictures in it to help you identify these awful weeds.

Thank you for reminding everyone, Leslie, I started in February with weed control and pre-emergent. I’m hoping it will take care of those little “hitch hikers” that gave me headaches and Smarty hair aches last year.

Now if Florida and the beach will get rid of the sand spurs we will be all set.

Thanks for sharing... Mimi likes to munch here and there on the grass when I am not paying attention. This is a great tip.

Your yard is so beautiful it's hard to imagine anything bad there. Sounds like you're right on top of it.
This year we have some kind of weed that STINKS and makes the dogs stink. Bedtime was insane and they got that horrid smell all over the pillows and blankets. I washed the bedding so often that the bedspread gave out. grrrrrrrrrrr
My husband doesn't have a great nose so it went over his head. Lucky for me right outside of his window at work was full of this stuff and when they weed wacked it, the smell of so much of it drove him nuts. Then he knew what I was going through at home and came home and pulled all the weeds. They have small yellow flowers on them and STINK.

Great reminder, Leslie, thank you! Now that we've had some rain in California, the weeds are just burgeoning.

And it is tick season too

I actually have a tick bite from last week that is quite infected. Be aware that with the green right now after the rains, they are everywhere. It would be hard to know if a havanese had one...so it is good to have the flea treatment that also covers ticks.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

We're in a severe drought again. Summer will come along and give us a tornado or two and then we'll get all of our water out in the lake. <sniffle> I miss the great thunderstorms we used to have

That part doesn't make me miss Cali at all! Those things are so horrible. Keep Tori safe

Besides the fox tails, those corkscrew things were a nightmare too at Yosemite!

Sandi~ Since Tori is a grass/weed eater, we can't spray anything chemical on them and the foxtails, et. al, seem to just grow better and stronger when we've used the "natural" herbicides to try to control them. So, I have resigned myself to a spring and summer of pull, pull, pull
