The Matt Police

I am an anti-matt nut! When my dogs were puppies, I was combing them six times a day...no matts allowed.

I then learned some show dogs have matts under their thick coat to make them look poofy....what?

A friend has a four month old puppy, I went to pet her and she was full of huge lumps. If I see her again, I'm going to offer to teach her how to get those matts out. I am not being critical, I hope, but don't these tight matts cause pain when they pull? And I know groomers will charge extra and also get very angry with her.

I've also been at events with other dogs where I can feel them...big ones. It does something to me...I just want to get them all out. I have helped several people learn how to do it without hurting the dog...

Am I nuts? Perhaps it stems from getting out all the fleas of our outdoor cats when I was a kid...I have very sensitive fingers. I am constantly checking for this.

There is nothing more wonderful that a smooth or curly, matt-free coat. Hey, we all get a tiny one from time to time, but those big lumpy ones...yikes.

Some mom's have doulas, perhaps I could hire myself out to blowing coat owners as the matt-assistant. LOL

You may be crazy, but, I'm right there with you!

And, are you kidding about some show dogs?! I've seen hardly any Havs, no show dogs, in person. But, at the Seattle show I went to I have to say that the two full-coated dogs I got to feel with my own fingers surprised me with how their hair was. I really thought they needed to be groomed,... (I'm trying to be polite, here.) Yet, one of them was owned and shown by the person who also owned and showed the Best in Breed dog. ??? I didn't get it then, but, from your statement, are Havs purposely left with mats?!?! Yikes.

Well, Linda, we may have to start an entire department of your "mat police!"

I know when I owned my Keeshond he also was ALWAYS much better groomed than the show dogs. That is kind of disappointing.

One big matt, sad video

This poor dog had to be uncomfortable. Makes you wonder what other neglect it goes through. Why do some people get dogs they are not interested in taking time to care for?

OMG - that video is hysterical! Thanks for sharing.

I am also the matt police, except when the dog is matted it usually winds up being shaved (a little less than in the video)...Lola's coat is now 4 weeks post-shave and I am actually considering keeping her this short. She is cuddly and also low maintenance. Lovely!

I saw that with a long haired cat at Petsmart. People were standing at the glass watching and saying how neat it was to see the coat come off in one piece.

Yikes...

We had a poor baby in rescue who couldn't even do his business because the matts were covering his anal area. These poor dogs must be in agony.

I know that the good breeders teach folks how to groom...another good reason to get a puppy from a wonderful breeder...

Yikes . . . that video is scary! Poor thing . . . plus I watched Buddy's Makeover which was the next Youtube video. I know the dog felt better, but he sure did look scalped. I need to decide when to do Jackson's next grooming . . . it always gets to a certain length, and then he mats big time! I can't stand them either, Linda, but I know Jackson hates me going for more than one. I try to spread it out, and the minute the warm weather hits, he will need a trim anyway.

Ivy, where is New Paltz?

Hmm...if I'm ever up your way, I'd be glad to...I could sit there for hours and do it as long as he doesn't bite me!

Could this be a havanese?
