ASPCA anti-puppymill survey

Hi all,
I was sent this in an e-mail by a dog trainer that is going to help me with some issues we're having. The ASPCA is going to use this information to fight puppy mills. They are asking that you take the survey and pass the link on in an email to all dog owners that you know. It's short and just takes a couple minutes. If it helps at all, it will be worth it.
Thanks!

I just filled in my survey. I hope that people who have had bad experiences especially, fill this in. Maybe something will be done about them!!

I'm not usually too cynical, but this looks like a "nice" way to collect information on as many breeders as possible - for what reason? I'm not sure. With California quickly trying to ban breeding, Albuequerque already in the works, and Kentucky already in process, I'm suspicious of these things.

Who is going to do something with this information? What good does it do for the ASPCA?

I am not afraid of anyone knowing I am a breeder, but I just can't see any good coming from reports like these.

Hmmmm, I never thought about it like that. Unfortunately, living in the midwest (Nebraska) and in a city where it's actually difficult to find a shelter dog (other than a lab or pitbull mix) I'm much more familiar with puppy mills than legislation that hurts reputable breeders.

One tiny bit of city law I do know, is that no business can have multiple dogs outside at the same time. So that means no doggie day care within the city limits, which is not at all convenient. They keep trying to change this, but the long time breeders and boarding kennels, that have built outside the city limits always protest (understandably) and so it gets dropped.

Kimberly, I was actually wondering what they would do with that information as i was filling it out. Hmmmm. I can see where you would be cautious.
Why(pardon my ignorance) would CA be trying to ban breeding?? Dont tell me they prefer puppy mills!! grrr

Why? They claim that the shelters have way too many dogs surrendered and killed each year. They think that if they require early sterilization (4 months of age or younger!) that it will solve everything. There will be hefty fines levied on anyone who chooses to keep an intact pet that does not have a commercial breeding licence. (A commercial breeding license also has a lot of restrictions, special facilities including concrete flooring, and regular inspections.) The AKC is talking about pulling out of California completely if it passes.

Suspicion by many says that PETA is the main backer of this assembly bill in California. PETA is against any pet ownership, period.

Over the weekend, I heard that many business in Kentucky are declaring bankruptsy already because of their new laws in place. I don't know how accurate that is and have not investigated it myself.

I saw this ASPCA survey mentioned on another site, and didn't fill out the survey. With all that is going on in CA and KY, I can't see the good in this survey.

Also, this CA bill - how is it going to stop the puppy mills? If they aren't closing them down now, how will this bill stop them. Why don't they just right a law that outlaws puppy mills? Why do they want to put the hardship on legitimate breeders? Why can't legit breeders just apply for a business license of some kind? Pay a fee for the license and set up an LLC for the breeders. Maybe all the breeders should get together, pool their resources and hire counsel to fight this.

OMG! I had no idea that was going on. That is CRAZY! That made me curious and i looked up PETA & all the things they have done. THey state:
" PETA and other animal protection groups blame people who donít spay and neuter their animals, and people who buy animals from breeders instead of adopting from shelters, for causing the animal overpopulation crisis.[91]"
That just makes me soooo mad. Is there anything we can do?? I cant believe that people believe that nonsense.

Michele, I don't think the bill in CA is going to stop puppy mills at all. I think it is going to do the opposite - shut down everyone except for the puppy mills. They will be big enough to get the licenses that a home breeder can't get. That's the way I read it.
