Small dog thefts are rising

I just saw on our news a segment on the increase of the theft of small dogs across the nation, possibly linked to the economy with people looking for an easy way to make money. One lady in the Seattle area had her three Poms stolen from her backyard, which had a 6 foot fence.

So, another reason for me to not be putting in that doggy door I'd love for convenience...mud, eagles, owls, dognappers.

AKC has a page on helping to make sure our dogs are as safe as possible.

How terrible! I imagine if someone stole Lincoln, he'd be shaved down within a week!

I do have a dog door, but I close it and don't let them have access to go in and out when I'm not home. Mostly because I don't want them to go out and cause trouble (barking), or just in case someone slips out. But also theft has crossed my mind.

I live way too close to Detroit for comfort when it comes to leaving ANYTHING valuable outside, particularly my puppy. I heard years ago about people snatching them as pit bull bait for training their fighting dogs, and ever since then I can't fathom leaving a small dog outside unattended. I wish I could just open the back door and let her out to a "secure" fenced yard to potty without having to stand out there every time, but I don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable doing that.

Just today a really large neighborhood dog who'd gotten loose wandered into our back yard, marked everything, and ambled off. I think he was probably friendly, but I didn't go out to see for myself. I have no idea what would have happened if I had a small Hav out there at the moment.

Sheri, that's terrible. I hope she somehow finds her Poms. Thanks for the warning!

How low do you have to be to steal somebody's pet? It's cruel on so many levels.

I couldn't leave Gryff unattended anyway with all the wild animals around here. Several of my neighbors have invisible fences and leave their dogs outside alone all the time. I could never fathom that.

The timing of this thread is interesting - as yesterday I came home from work and my three come running around from the back yard to greet me in the driveway - no person in sight - my 19 year old is upstairs IN THE SHOWER!!!! I ALMOST KILLED HIM!! He doesnt "get it" - "Mom, it was such a nice day, I was letting them run around outside - anywahy - What's gonna happen to them" I could just smack him up across the head!!!!

Well they are on their electric fence & would never go anywhere on their own, but I never leave them unattended, even if I am watching from a window. My kids live in a lala land where they think nothing bad can happen

As to the electric fence, my neighbor down the street has the most irresistible little yorkie who seems too small for that collar, but that's what they use. I didn't know they had it, and walked by one day to see him sitting at the gate in their driveway. I talked to him, and he walked right through the gap, so I thought he was loose. He didn't come all the way down the driveway, but I picked him up and walked him to their front door. That's when they told me about the electric fence, and I think I walked him right through the boundary, but maybe because I was holding him at chest level, he didn't get the shock.

Couldn't someone just come along and pick him up that way? It seems like a good idea for a larger dog, but I'd be nervous relying on that system with small dogs in my neighborhood, anyway.
