Choosing a Bed - Recommendations?

I saw Lina's Orvis fleece bed in another thread and I'm thinking about ordering that one, but wondered if there were alternate suggestions I should consider. I'm not even bringing puppy home until May, but I'm already shopping and trying to make smart choices.

I'm assuming I'll be starting with a crate and a fluffy mat inside, but I'm not sure for how long - I kind of prefer a regular dog bed for her unless she really likes the crate.

I don't like any of the ones I've seen in pet stores, and I want a good cushion on it that doesn't have lumpy, cheap filling. I guess dogs like the bolstered style for snuggling, but I think I want one that is large enough for her to grow into and be able to stretch out in, rather than only fitting her if she is sort of curled into it.

Lina, if you are reading this, do you think the small or medium fleece orvis bed is the right size for a Hav I expect to get around 13lb, if I want her to be able to stretch out in it? Do you like the "mattress" in it? Is it my imagination, or do they like to sleep stretched out sometimes?

I guess I'm trying to avoid buying 6 different beds to narrow down the right one. I don't mind spending a little more for a "keeper."

My guys love the medium Orvis bed. I had 2 but they both "shared" the same one at the same time. So I donate the other one to a friends new dog

Sally,((Oliver)) Comet and Pennie too!

Sally, do they sleep in it together? I have no plans to get a second Hav anytime soon (ok, well I say that now....) and you think the medium is the right size for one to stretch out in, but not too large?

My yorkie liked to sleep with toys and blankets and stuff in her bed, so I guess better too large than too small if she is a similar hoarder.

Diane, I'd get the small, not the medium, unless you're planning on adding another dog in the future! Kubrick can stretch out just fine on the small and he's 14.5lbs. I'm glad I have two beds though as they often will either sleep on the same bed or one on each... at least they have the option. In either case, I would only recommend the Ultimate Fleece that I posted in the Kubrick and Hitchcock thread as I've heard some of the other Fleece beds have air trapped inside or something? I'm not sure if that's right, but I haven't noticed that in either of the Orvis beds I bought so I definitely recommend those (the other bed I have, the smaller one, isn't available anymore). They DO have wonderful customer service, though, and will take back anything if you don't like it, so you can always buy it and return it if it doesn't work out.

Good luck!

Diane, I am laughing so hard when you say that you are trying to avoid buying 6 different beds Once that pup comes, you will buy at LEAST 6 different beds. Once for each room!! I think that I can speak for all the forum members - beds are like toys - we like lots of them!!!!

Hey Lina, thanks a bunch! I think I will end up getting that bed because I like the way it looks, too. You said the sage was more of a taupe, right? That sounds perfect. If I do end up getting a second Hav, I can always order the medium later and keep the small as an extra hangout. My husband would flip if he knew I was even thinking about a second dog...

Ah, I can't wait. I'm getting no work done today...

LOL sooo true. This is also one of the down sides of being a part of this forum, you end up spending soooo much money because everyone posts new items they get making you want to get one or two or three for your babies.

I have no suggestions for you- exept that I buy cheap beds, because they get peed on, chewed on, thrown up in and washed a million times! I like the idea that I can toss the $15 bed and get a new one when it's wore out-

Laurie, aaaggh... I know, but I am trying to be good and not over-do it. I plan to feed raw prepared diet like NV medallions and the frozen disgusting tripe and stuff that's supposed to be so good for them, training classes, holistic vet care, grooming, etc.... I will go broke if I buy a ton of "stuff" on top of all that.

Well, we'll see if I can put my money where my mouth is on that one...

Katie.... you know what, that makes sense.... maybe I should start with a cheap one while we are still potty training and finding a food that works.
