Yuk with this rolling in dead things.

I asked the vet why Lucky insists on rolling in dead things. I don't mind the lifeless wasps or tiny stuff he seems to find dug into gravel, but there's this revolting pile of remains of a bird or chipmunk in our field and he goes for it every time and I bathe him every time-have to; he sleeps in our bed. Yuk. The vet said there was a reason: "He's a dog." Ha ha. There must be some good explanation for this yukkiness. Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks. p.s. and yes, we could get rid of the remains, but it will have to be my DH who does it, so it could be a while.

Great article. Thanks Dave. I will now see Lucky as shrouded in obnoxious Hawaiian shirts rather than yukky dead matter. The hiding their own scent from aggressors makes sense to me. Like me, Lucky is wary of any other being in the woods. Appreciate your help.

Yeah, I watch my adorable, fluffy boy bounding around in the grass… and then see him do something TOTALLY gross, like roll on a dead animal or eat goose poop…. And have to remind myself that as cute as they are, under all the fluffy hair, they ARE dogs!

Yes, but really quite remarkable, magical, adorable, sensitive, loving, and hilarious...dogs. Just received two books I think you'd enjoy: The Genius of Dogs and In Defense of Dogs. Theory in line with your view of positive reinforcement etc. and quite remarkable discoveries about these wondrous creatures.

Gibbs sniffs before he rolls and I usually cue "leeeave it" and get him to walk away.

"Leeeave it" is his best command, but "Gibbs Come" is a lost cause. He just looks at me and "flips me the paw".

John

Kodi understands "Leave it!" as not to put X in his mouth. It doesn't seem to have ANY carry-over, whatsoever, to rolling in dead things!
