Anyone else receive this?

I just got this e-mail from VerticalScope:

We don't want to lose you! Canada has a new anti-spam law that may affect our ability to send you information that you may be interested in receiving. To continue to receive emails and other electronic communications containing Havanese Forum : Havanese Forums information, updates, newsletters, and other promotional materials, please indicate your consent by clicking the button below.

If you cannot view the button, you can consent by clicking here

If you do not provide your consent to receive this information, including newsletters and promotional materials, you may still receive certain administrator and notification messages about your account if your account is currently set to receive these messages. You may withdraw your consent at any time and change your communication preferences by using the unsubscribe link.

This message is personalized to you. Please do not forward this email. If you would prefer to receive these messages at another email address, please sign up here. Electronic communications will be sent by Havanese Forum : Havanese Forums, a part of VerticalScope Inc. 111 Peter Street, Suite 700, Toronto, Canada M5H 2H1.

While I do, of course, want to continue my involvement in the forum, I certainly do NOT want to receive "updates, newsletters, and other promotional materials" in my e-mail. Do we HAVE to agree to this to continue using the forum? It makes it sound like we do?

Nope, haven't received that email. Looks suspicious. I wouldn't click any buttons or links in it.

I haven't. That's why I posted it here first!

Hmm, I haven't received this e-mail but I have my options with the forum to not receive email from administrators. I have received emails similar to this from other sites and organizations I'm a part of though.

There's a new anti-spam legislation starting July 1st here in Canada, so that part of the email isn't bogus (I double checked the gov of Canada website when I first got an email to see if it was legitimate). I've yet to be asked to click any buttons or links confirming anything though.

Yup, it is part of our great country's anti-spam legislation. I am getting that e-mail from almost everything I am subscribed to. I think it is asking for permission to send those newsletters we get sometimes that highlight what has been happening on the forum. I consented.

Yes, I got it and it is legit. All the sites I subscribe to are sending me a similar notification. Canada has new anti-spam laws and the companies have to get our consent to send us info all over again.

I don't want to get newsletters though. and they make is sound like if you don't consent, you might lose access to the forum. I think I will take my chances for now. I do NOT want them sending me e-mails I haven't requested.

That's the point of the new legislation, so companies and organizations can't send email that a user hasn't requested to receive. The reason you got the email from VerticalScope was because of the new legislation, and HF had to inform you of it and re-get your permission to receive emails like the monthly newsletter and info from administrators. IF you don't want to be getting those emails, you can change your settings (I think it's under options - messaging and notifications) in your User CP. I have mine set so I don't receive those emails, which is why I didn't receive the email from VerticalScope.

That's my understanding of it anyways.

OK, I don't get anything from them currently, so I hope, if I leave everything alone and don't "opt in", it will be fine. If I suddenly disappear, you'll all know I made the wrong choice!

I'm getting the same basic email from all over the place. Not sure why they're sending it to Americans though...I think they can still freely spam them. Of course, legitimate companies will send out the permission form as required, but true spammers will continue to spam I'm sure.
