Angry The heat is back, ugh!!!!

I don't know about most of you but my two can not handle the heat and humidity. Timmy refuses to take walks and I think Mae is following suit. This is Mae's first summer so I was curious about how she would handle things, she LOVES to walk but that has ceased since the dreaded humidity is back. My dog walking group is moving our morning walks to 7:00am, which today was a bit better, but I ended up having to carry both my pups for part of this walk and it wasn't even one loop around our neighborhood which we usually do about four times around. I also take an evening walk about 8:00'ish but I think our duration for both walks is going to be shortened considerably. Thankfully both their appetites have also decreased which has happened to Tim last year so their lack of activity shouldn't cause too much weight gain. I asked my vet about his loss of appetite and she said heat definitely plays a part and I have noticed I'm not as hungry either. I have started on three smaller meals per day which seems to work better. Happy summer, yuck! I just keep reminding myself of our past winter to keep things in perspective. Oh and don't forget, especially all our new puppy owners, the street can get VERY HOT even for just a short walks this time a year, test it with your hands before putting your pup down to prevent burned pads!

Yeah, Kodi's not keen on long walks in the hot either. He'll walk EARLY in the morning, but I don't like getting UP that early! He does get a lot of exercise working, though, and i take him to one indoor training place or another several times a week. And of course, we have our training room in the basement that is cool too.

We don't walk. Today should hit about 110. Both dogs would probably have blistered feet and we all might have heat exhaustion.

Its not that hot here but the humidity is TERRIBLE! Canela is strong little trooper, she will go on even if its too hot. So, I have to watch her and carry her if I think its too much for her. Now, Vino, he will just STOP and SIT and look at me and will not move. Like you, on one of our walks I had to carry Vino more then half way home (he weighs 14lbs which isn't too bad) but Canela was a good girl she kept moving. Around the house I only take one Havi at a time just in case I have to carry them home.
For longer walks, I usually take my guys walking on forest preserve trails (only 2 at time). One time I had Hunter (my 56lbs Vizsla) and Vino and we were only half-mile into our walk and Vino wasn't having it; he is soo spoiled and he knows it. He just sat there and look up at me. I felt bad for Hunter becuz he LOVES walks, so I decided to carry Vino for the next 5 miles with plenty of stops OMG my back hated me!!! But Hunter enjoy himself and people we saw me carrying Vino thought it was funny and made funny comments.

Jen,
I wet my guys down with a hose before we walk in my neighborhood. I've also been having my dog walker come twice a day for 20-30 min walks, instead of the full hour.

When I walk them, I only take them to places they can swim. Today is was so hot so I took them to a great new trail I discovered. I park the car and walk a short distance to the stream. They get completely wet down. Then we walk for about 8 min to a path along the stream where they can pop into the water at anytime. The walk is about 70% shade. Call me when you want to join us!!

Linda, I forgot about that - I know I did that last year with Canela; I use to dampen her coat before our walks but I completely forgot about this year. Thanks for reminding me!!

same like you, I usually take them to places with water, I let the Vizsla always get in the water but not so much the Havies am always concern about their hair. With the Vs, after their walks I let them get in our pool to cool down faster since I usually run with them. I guess I need to let Canela and Vino get more water action too. I'm more cautious with them since they are small. again, thanks for reminding me.

I'm not sure about the wetting down option at least for Timmy, he's such a weirdo. Linda, if you're around this weekend I am too so count me in for a watery hike I'm sure Mae would love it! She may come home looking like Gemma though LOL.
