Ever have a dog pick you?

Ever have a dog pick you? When I got my dog buddy I heard about a litter by word of mouth and went to see them. I had never owned a dog. They were about 4-5 weeks old. They were all really cute. All of a sudden a puppy bigger than them came running thru them and sat on my foot and looked up at me and stayed there. He was 2 weeks older from another litter and was an only child. She hadn't planned on selling him but once he sat on my foot and looked up at me I had to have him and she let me pick him up a couple weeks later.

So don't let your choices be set in stone you might get surprised and your puppy may pick you.

Hi Mike, that is the exact scenario I'm wondering about with our pick, since we chose her without meeting her. It may be that when we go for our visit, we'll get pulled to a different puppy and end up bringing someone else home. Who knows.

What the breeder told me, though, was that most people remark when they come to see the puppies that they are all so happy and sweet, very similar personalities in that respect, that they have a very difficult time making a decision, so we are hoping that is true and that we'll feel very confident about our choice.

That said... I did meet a then 2-year old adult Hav last year, jet black with a long silky coat who I very nearly adopted, and sometimes still wonder whether I missed "The One." She came right over and stole my heart immediately, seemed to really like me, but wanted nothing to do with my husband, which is funny because he's the gentlest guy ever. A few months ago she was still available and an option, and I still wonder if she was supposed to be with me. I'm sure I'll be very happy with my puppy, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about that black beauty, either. I wish I could have them both...!!

My first dog as an adult was a poodle. I got to have pick of the litter. Since there were only four boys that made it easier in a way. When my DH and I went to the breeder's home and I sat down on the floor, three of them were crawling all over me. They were kissing and trying to untie my shoelaces. They were shaking their bottoms saying pick me, pick me. Then there was the fourth, he walked up to me sort of sniffed the air and turned tail, totally disinterested. After a couple of minutes I knew I had to have him. And that's how "Andre, Duke of Walden," or Andy as we affectionately called him, came into my life.

I'm a sucker for black & whites! We had bought our first Havanese from the same breeder and had the pick of the litter..well between the two litters she had at the time. 13 pups total. I forget the ratio of male to female. As we had a male already, we were going for a female. She was my 14th bday present, couldn't have gotten any better than that! My choices were between a black & white parti and a black and tan with "eyebrows." I was really leaning towards the black & white in terms of looks. The breeder would let all puppies loose so we I could play with them. When they got tired they started "the puppy pile up" where they'd a little pile of them all. Except for one -- the black and tan girl who would come crawl in my lap. She picked me & that was that!

Smile Go with your heart!

When I decided to get a Havanese pup and had received email photos of the litter, I had one beautiful female picked out. There was the possibility that another person had first pick, and the breeder sent me a picture of the one male (my Buddy). He was so funny looking compared to the other beauties, but he was so cute and looked like he had attitude. When I went to see the pups, the one I thought I wanted was spoken for, and Buddy was wrestling with another pup. He was so little and spunky, I made up my mind and never looked back. I can hardly imagine I would want any other dog. He's got an independent mind of his own, yet he gets more loving as time goes by, and he just is a kick in the pants. He's a big dog in a little body.
Here's the first email picture of him before I met him, and one of him about a month ago (he's 9 mos. now). When I saw it, I just went Oh my gosh! and laughed. He was the one for me. Now I'm partial to the black and whites.

The same thing happened to me when we were picking our red standard Brandy. We knew we wanted a red female, there were 4 to choose from and we had the 1st pick of the female. The breeder told us who in her opinion was the pick and if we wanted, she was ours. When we came and met the girls, they were all adorable, the pick female was sweet, but there was one that was really outgoing, kept coming up to my hubby, giving him tons of kisses and sitting in his lap. Guess what, we left with her, so she really did the picking. I guess Brandy really did know what she was doing, as she and my hubby are still in love. lol

As we got Charlie from interstate, we didn't get the chance to meet all the puppies... which is something I worried about. What if I was choosing the wrong one? When the breeder started sending photos of the puppies I actually had Charlie at the end of my list of preferences! I originally wanted the black and tan boy and then the gold boy and then my last preference...Charlie! Poor charlie.

But as they got a bit older and started to develop (personalities as well) I was drawn to Charlie. The breeder told me that he was the first to open his eyes, first to try and get out of the litter box, first to come running over when called. He got cuter by the day, and there was one photo of Charlie that melted my heart and I knew I had to have him! Although, I had to pleed with the breeder, because she was planning on giving him to her friend who wanted to show him (but the friend was still undecided). It was touch and go for a while, and she said I could have him if her friend decided not to have him. I was a nervous wreck waiting for the decision - I actually felt sick. Luckily, the friend wouldn't have been able to take him for another couple of months, and so the breeder let me have him! I was so relieved!

Eta: when I finally laid my eyes on Charlie at the airport ( I was soo nervous..I didnt know what to expect), he was sitting in his crate all quiet and patient and a bit scared and I fell in love with him at first sight.

I think Scooter chose us. The breeder had two litters and let them all out to run and play. His pink nose caught my eye and he kept running over to us. He'd crawl in our laps and when I picked him up he snuggled my neck. SOLD!!! LOL My kids were falling in love with every puppy there but I just kept showing them Scooter and we all ended up loving him. He is such a joy and brings a smile to my face every day!!! I'd have a house full of them if I could. DH would kill me though!

Yes I belive some dogs do pick their new owners!
It happened with this litter. A family came over to see the puppies. She had a puppy that she liked from pictures on my website, but kind of had her heart set on a female. That was until "her" puppy climbed right up in her lap and fell asleep, while all the other puppies were still running and playing like crazy! It was meant to be! (and it did end up being the one she liked from the pictures)
