Leo was out around lots of people, in puppy kindergarten and around dogs I knew were properly vaccinated after his second shot which he received while still at his breeder's. I have always erred on the side of heavy socialization for my puppies and have never had one get sick from these early encounters. I did once adopt an 8 week old puppy from a rescue group that had kennel cough. She recovered over the course of a month, didn't infect the other 3 dogs that lived in our home at that time and lived to over 15 years. As soon as she recovered from kennel cough I had her out and about. I believe that extensive, mindful early socialization is so important to having a well adjusted adult dog that I am willing to take a bit of risk in getting young puppies out in the world. That said, dog parks, big box pet stores, doggy daycare, kennels and other places where lots of dogs hang out are off limits until the pup is fully vaccinated.
