Havanese Guard Dog

I don't know if anyone has any similar stories but Dora can be quiet the guard dog. We were at OSU campus and I let the girls offleash to run around. We were sitting under the tree hanging out. An hour later a student came up and apparently left his bag behind the tree. Dora chased after him barking like crazy. She usually never acts like this. I told her leave it and she is very obedient. She stopped for a second and then ran back after this kid.

She is usually a guard dog for the maltese and takes that job seriously. Belle tends to get into lots of trouble with other dogs. She is very alpha and forgets her size. There was a sheltie that she chases and growls at in agility class. I had both of the girls out and when the sheltie actually attacked Belle. Out of no where comes her body guard flying in the air growling. Dora didn't bite the dog but she did enough to scare him.

She is normally the sweetest submissive little girl but she reminds me on occasion she is a dog and she values her pack!

I had my first experience with Riley this weekend. I took both boys over to my step-moms, she has a golden retriever (Casey) whom Riley absolutely adores. Riley was so excited when I pulled in the drive way I ended up just letting him go running in the house while I was getting Monte out of the car. When I went into the house I was carrying Monte and of course Casey comes walking over to say hi and see what I have in my arms. Monte got a little scared seeing this bigger dog and made a low growl noise then out of no ware Riley comes running over growling and put himself between me and Casey. Me, my mom AND Casey just kind of looked at Riley and said what was that..
Of course Riley is sitting there all proud of himself tail wagging like he did good warning Casey to be gentle with his little brother..LOL
I am actually kind of glad that the first time Riley decided to be protective it happened with a dog I can trust. It has also made us aware of Monte’s fear of big dogs and there is no better dog than Casey to help him get over this fear. By the time we left Monte was warming up to Casey, not playing yet but would go over to him for a sniff.

Amanda,
I'm surprised a sheltie would attack at all. They are certainly NOT known for that type of behavior.I have had 2.Shelties really are fabulous family dogs.Quincy is far more "bark-y" around other dogs then Vinnie, but Vinnie thing is to bark at loud cars, motorcycles etc!

Cute stories!! Lily is the alpha in our house, and if you yell at one of the other two dogs, she runs over & growls at them & physically puts them in their place, as if to punish them herself!! BUT>>>> If Lexi or Logan is sick, or has the hickups, or makes funny noises in their sleep(which mine do all the time) She will run right over to them to make sure that they are ok, and then lays next to them to be sure they stay that way - it really is cute!!

molly

When I'm on the computer, Molly will stand by my side like she's guarding me. She follows me around everywhere and when I go to sit down for the night (to watch tv, read, relax, etc.), she plops herself down right on my legs! I don't know if she's guarding me or just loves my company! I love it though!

Laurie, that is the cutest thing. Riley does help me correct Monte all the time but I have not seen the lovey dovey stuff yet so I was surprised when he decided it was his job to protect Monte. Monte has only been home for 6 weeks so I’m sure I have a lot more new developments on the way.

Ricky barks at any noise or anything that might startle him. If he sees and hears neighbors in their own yards, he's off and barking like a mad dog. But, if someone comes in the house, Ricky barks a little and then is all lovey dovey and can't wait to go up to the person and greet them. It is usually Sammy who growls and barks the most at people. He is definitely an Alpha dog, in spite of his 9 lbs. He doesn't bark at much, but because he is afraid of strangers, he is the one to bark and growl as if he was some kind of Doberman. LOL He backs up because he's afraid, but he still keeps growling. He's getting better at this and not as bad as the first weeks we had him here.

I take the boys out as often as I can and go out of my way to get them to see people, cars, trucks, public places where there is stuff going on. They need to learn that not everything out there is big and scary!

I have never seen either one of them defend the other though. Some cute stories here.

Julie,
I know this sheltie is a rescue dog so he may have some issues. My maltese acts absolutely insane everytime she is around him. I read in Cesar's book that dogs will actually kill a dog that isnt stable and it is almost like Belle knows this dog has issues and feels like she needs to do something. We will be in the middle of agility practice and if he comes into the building Belle runs off the course. Thank goodness his mother is understanding and didn't bring him to the last obedience trial!

She is around many other shelties and does just fine... they are brillant little dogs!
