Do I trim his eyes or leave them to grow?

Over the past year, I've let Max's hair grow out, but cut his bangs some and kept his eyes slightly trimmed. The last two grooming sessions, I've told them not to trim his eyes at all. I thought if I let it all grow out, it would fall naturally down his face.

Max and Cooper rough house like boys several time a day. Their play consists of mouthing, with Max on the losing end . I've attached a picture of Max after a 20 minute session of play. Doesn't he look pitiful? And it's no use to clean him up because they'll be at it again in no time flat. I want to let them be dogs and play, but I miss my beautiful Max!!

This is my question. Max has a grooming appointment tomorrow. Should I continue to let his eyes grow out? Or should I have them trimmed back. Once his eyes are trimmed, they must always be maintained because the stubble growing back bothers Max and he rubs his eyes a lot. How many of you do not trim their eyes AT ALL. How many of you do a minimal trim?

Thanks for your input!

Janan, the photo said it was currently unavailable on my screen.

I have the same issue with Jackson . . . plus tear stains for which we are continuing to find solutions. My groomer also trimmed a lot around the eyes and also trimmed off the stains which made him look skinned. I have grown it out, and now it looks kind of messy, too. There has to be a good in-between solution . . . maybe just a small trim? I even have to trim Jackson's eyelashes because they get soooo long.

Janan . . . yes . . . sorry I am just getting back to this. Max looks great to me! And NO tear stains . . . has he ever had them?

Jackson's hair does the same thing . . . I am constantly smoothing it out of his face. Max's hair looks even more cottony than his. What kind of conditioner are you using? I am going to try the Coat Handlers diluted spray mix soon and see if it will help to make the hair behave more. I guess you could put it on your hand and then smooth in down. It looks like if those strands grow out under his eyes, they will eventually weigh down. The bangs are a different issue. If left uncut, it is a constant topknot or smoothing back for Jackson, so I just cut them and they still flop

This is his "do" right before I cut his bangs last week:

I cut Kubrick's bangs but I do NOT trim around the eyes at all. I don't want to constantly do it and I personally am not a fan of the look. I think that Max is still growing his out and that's why you get that messy look. Give it a couple of months and it shouldn't look so messy, even after a play session. Here's a picture of Kubrick right after a big play session. You can see that his hair around his eyes lies flat (due to them being longer than Max's) but his bangs are cut.

Jackson looks wonderful!

I just got Coat Handlers last weekend and I'm not that thrilled with the results. I probably need to use it more before making my decision about whether I like it or not. I may have had too high expectations.

Max doesn't stain too much. I'll put some Angel Glow in his food if he starts to get too gummy. I'm also always pulling out eye boogers. Both my dogs have to put up with me messing with their eyes all the time. lol

After romping with Cooper, Max has a wet mug from all the mouthing. That wet then drys and hardens. So it's hard to comb out Max around the face. I wish I could train their play toward toys instead of mouthing. These two are always competing to see who is the dominant male. Max may win, but he looks like he's been in a drunken brawl! lol

Lina, I'm so glad you answered my post because I've so admired your Kubrick! You helped me a great deal with my decision. I think I will hang in there and let his hair around his eyes grow out.

I am going thru the same thing with mine right now except I don't cut around the eyes, just the bangs. Lina, how do you get the hair on top of the head not to fall over the bang area and cover their faces? The only thing I can figure is a top knot.

I can't offer advice, but just wanted to say in that photo he looks anything but pitiful to me! You must have very high standards - lol! I think he's just beautiful. A little tousled, but still a very handsome dog. It sounds like the best idea is to keep letting it grow out - you're in the home stretch!

I wondered the same thing about having 2 havs after watching them play - they look like they would destroy each others coats, and all that doggie spit caking up their hair - yuk! lol! I love to give kisses on their cheeks and around their face and ears, and I don't think I'd want to as much if their brother or sister beat me to it.
