Question Playing or Fighting???

We think (hope) they're playing but aren't sure. Scooter will have a toy and Murphy will go to take it. Scooter will bare his teeth and make a gurgling noise with his head in the air, then he'll mouth Murphy but doesn't bite. Murphy does the same thing back and then they're off for the chase! Sometimes it escalates a bit and the noises get louder and a bark or two will be thrown in.

At what point do we step in? How can we tell if it's too aggressive???

My two do alittle of that...Casper has always been a little bigger than Missy and sometimes he gets rough playing, and growling and with all that hair, I can't tell if he is really biting her.

The way I do it...is when I am not comfortable with the rough play I break it up. Casper understands I think he is playing too rough and he stops...well sometimes I have to tell him a couple times

I've learned through my foster dogs/Todd that if no one's getting hurt (yelping or running away/hiding and the other won't leave them alone) it's not worth it to step in.
Sometimes they play really rough and if it scares you break them up but from the sounds of what you describe it's only play..as Murphy gets bigger it will most likely get rougher for awhile as they try to work out their places in their Pack.

Sounds like my house 15 times a day. Dugan makes a growl/grumling noise when they play and Brady shows a lot of teeth. They are both always coming back for more, so I know they are having fun. Often, Dugan will break into a circle around the table and Brady pounces him when he comes back around. Brady is much bigger than Dugan, but Dugan is in charge so I don't really worry. Dugan loves to grab Brady by the neck and start shaking. Then, they just start going wild.

Ann, sounds like playing to me. But it can be scary. I agree, if you can't take it, break it up. But I remember someone from here telling me when we first got Cash that if one runs away and hides and doesn't come back for more then you have a problem...otherwise just let them work it out. And take more pictures for us!!!!

Sounds like playing to me. I was intially nervous to see Benji and Lizzie wrestle and pull, bite but soon realized their play was not vicious and they both enjoyed it. If I heard Lizzie yelp (she was just a little puppy), I would say "Gentle" to Benji and he would tone it down.

Best, Poornima
