Mounting -- Why not?

Here is a good article on mounting. It is what is called a Fixed Action Pattern or simply put pre-wired software ,and a means of survival. Like Jean Donaldson says in Oh Behave. "mounting is sex, mounting is sex, mounting is sex" and we should scream it from the rooftops. LOL

I have to agree with that article. Kodi will mount Shelby (they are both fixed) and I know it is the only way he gets to express his dominance over her. Shelby will always put Kodi in his place, and this is how he tries to assert himself. I just let them be, because nothing is going to happen.

However, Shelby will mount my leg if I ignore her request to be picked up. So, before I pick her up, I will tell her "off" and then make her sit.

Jean might disagree with you on the "dominance" issue. This is one topic still up for debate.

A bit off topic but still funny
Tugger mounted a dog today at the dogpark. He has been neutered since he was 4 months old and I have never seen him do this before. The other dog owner is standing back smiling and I run over and stop him. They say, he really likes her. I look over and here is their female backing into Tugger, tail raised and whining. I ask kind of jokingly, "Is she in heat" they shoot back "Oh yeah, but she is almost done!" and then they take off real quick while I recover. WHY would you bring your female dog in heat to a Dog Park except for a free backyard breeding?

Thanks for posting articles Dave. I'd never come across these if you didn't post them here and I wondered about our dogs. They often begin play with one mounting the other and we haven't seen any reason to intervene so far. It's good to see that we're handling things ok.

Interesting article.... What are your feelings about humping when it's directed toward people?

Baxter has never mounted another dog, but often will hump his bed, or the kids leg.... especially when they are down on the floor with him. I know all of the books say it is a dominance thing, and I don't let them allow it to continue.... just have them say no and distract him with something else. If he still continues, they leave the room. I obviously don't want to allow it--- it can be very uncomfortable when he does it to a guest. (The only person other than the kids he's done it to is the piano teacher.... and she is often on the ground playing a music board game etc.)

Any thoughts on what might be sparking the behavior in these instances?
