Maltese or Havanese?

I bought Cleo almost a year ago, she was sold as a Maltese but is about 12 pounds (which is way above maltese standard). Is it possible to have a solid white havanese? There was all white puppies in the litter she came from. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of bigger maltese out there so size isn't necessarily an indication. I have seen a lot of larger maltese that were probably bred with poodles or bichons- they tend to have bigger litters. But there are also all white Havanese. You can see in my photo- I have two Havanese and one Maltese. Did you maltese come with papers or what makes you think you may have a Havanese?

She does not have papers. She has the bigger nose like a havanese, she just looks more like a havanese then a maltese. That is by looking at the pictures of the white ones (I am going to cut her hair next week and I will post pictures then)

My hubbys cousin has two maltese and they are pretty big! They both prob weigh at least 10-12 lbs- Did you get to see her parents? If they were both bigger maltese, that could explain why she is on the bigger side-
Also, if you don't have papers for her, she could very well be a mix, which could explain why she is on the bigger side.

Go ahead and post photos and you will get some opinions. I think one of the easiest ways to tell is more in body- maltese are more square in structure and havs are slightly longer. I think there is a big variety in havs and maltese especially when you look at breeders who aren't breeding to the standard.

For instance, here is a pic of a Maltese from a pet store, my Havanese, and my Maltese. Both maltese are AKC registered but obviously very different and that maltese was only like 8 or 9 months old there.

I love that photo of yours, Amanda, as it really shows there can be differences w/o necessarily meaning a bad thing. Believe it or not, I have had at least two diff. customers come into the store saying they have Maltese weighing 20 lbs. (one was 22 lbs!). There are a lot of Maltese in my area, Yorkies too, and I've seen and heard of plenty of them from 2 lbs. to 20+ lbs., so go figure..... Not that all of those are purebred and to standard, but there is a mixed bag out there.

I've often said, in the earlier days we had Sammy, that he looked like a black Maltese because of his petite stature, eyes and hair, but he is purebred Hav.

Amanda, Do maltese also have the reputation of not looking all alike, like the havanese?

Marj- I often get asked if Belle is a white yorkie cause she is small but she is in the standard. Belle was really tiny as a pup and stopped growing so we took her into testing. She grew more after age 4. I know a lot of byb and pet store dogs mix maltese with other breeds cause usually a maltese litter is 1-3 dogs. I have some old maltese magazines and they do look a bit different- they were bred down in size and the face more snippy.

Ryan- are you asking if she is a maltese silky dog?
