Kodi Tries Therapy Dog Work

My Dad has been in the hospital, and now is in a rehab for a week or so, as they help him get his strength back before returning home. The rehab place allows dogs, so I took Kodi with me yesterday. I think he'd be good at this!

He happily sat on the bed with my Dad, and was very gently around his splint and other equipment. When he wasn't on the bed, he lay on the floor beside me, not blinking an eye at my dad's room mate rolling in and out on a wheel chair, or staff coming in and out. The only time I had to even say anything to him was when they were brining dinner in. (meatball subs) He got VERY interested in those smells, and I had to remind him, "Not for you!"

Good going Kodi

Sounds like Kodi would make a great therapy dog. I hope your father has a speedy recovery.

I wonder what the therapy dog training is like. I have seen them therapy dogs at Boston hospitals.

Lulu is not ready for therapy. I take her to see my mother in law in an extended care facility, once in a while. Some people enjoy seeing Lulu, but for the most part, Lulu gets too excited. I think perhaps she is too young, (just turned 11 months). WTG Kodi!

Oh, Kodi was a maniac at 11 months!!! Barky, wild, couldn't sit still… Maturity definitely helps!

Kodi doesn't have any formal "Therapy Dog" training, just lots of good, solid obedience training. If I were going to use him as an "official" therapy dog, he'd have to go through one of the programs and get officially tested. We're much too busy with competitive things at this point, but it might be a great retirement activity for him!

He would pass with flying colors and would be a great retirement activity for him. But you will have another Havanese so add on a few more years. Hum, well your book will be published and you can handle both.

Kodi is a natural. Therapy work would be a nice transition when he retires. It's wonderful the rehab facility welcomes dogs. I bet Kodi brightened everyones day!
Maggie starts Adv Obedience next week at the club she attends. We're moving maybe toward Therapy work. She does enjoy watching the agility dogs. We'll know more as each class progresses.

The one thing I think might be VERY hard for him is that they have to ignore food dropped on the floor near them. He's such a chow hound, that would be vERY hard for him. He will stop if I say "Leave it!", but my understanding is that you aren't allowed to tell them to leave it alone… they have to do it on their own.
