a few OCD tips from a CDL...

I had a few tips I wanted to share with you all...

1) For all you commercial raw feeders... With the cost of the NV medallions skyrocketing and our budget dwindling-- I wanted to find a way to spend less on the boys (DH and I have switched from fillet mingon to ny strip-LOL - why shouldn't they help out) so when the kibble didn't work for Cash, the nutritionist, who knew I was also trying to save a bit said that it was OK and even better to add 25% lean ground meat to their diet of primarily medallions. So, here is the part I am most proud of and want to share... I bought 4 packages of ground turkey 93/7 (80 ounces-5lbs for $10) and smoosh them into a cookie sheet with a 1" side to it. I then score the sheet into about 80 pieces... and freeze it... once it is frozen I break them into the pre-scored pieces and store in a freezer bag... The boys love it-- Cash gets a litte more food-- (an ounce of 93/7 ground turkey or ground beef is 40 calories opposed to 68 cals per medallion) and I get to stretch a bag of medallions by 25%. and know I am doing something good for them as well. I have been feeding this way for 2 weeks and they are both doing great! (jasper only gets raw at night)

2) face (and feet) wash--- As you know I hate the idea of raw on their beards--- so I have been keeping a bottle of very, very, diluted (with water) pantene smooth 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner mixed with a bit of DVM clorihexiderm 2% shampoo...which is what my vet gave us when cash had is bacterial infection by the kitchen sink. I put a drop on a paper towel and then wet the paper towel well and wipe their faces... The pantene 2 in 1 keeps their beards soft and the clorihexiderm is an antibacterial... I also use this if give them a quick paw bath.

3) this is not conclusive it hasn't been long enough...but I started the boys on Pawier. Other threads have mentioned this vitamin supplement for tear staining. I thought I would try it because the nutritionist suggested b-vitamin complex for Cash to help with energy, and Jasper has tear stains -- so I thought I would try it. (I have to disclose the nutritionist was not as high on pawier as another b supplement as it has vitamin K in it-- but with the thought it could work for tear stains too....) It has only been a little over a week... but within 3 days the boys seemed to have more energy and I am not sure but it seems Jasper's eyes are less gunky...of course the fur is still stained. It is not cheap--but they offer a 25% discount if you order on their show weeks...

that's it for now forum friends from your OCD CDL.

I just ordered supplements too, after our consult with Sabine. She doesn't like feeding kibble but the guys are doing so well on I'm hesitant to change. I am going to do the fish oil and vitamin additives she suggested though. I'm also going to buy much better quality treats!!! The stuff I was buying must be the equivalent of Cheetos and Mountain Dew for us!

Missy, did you buy the gallon? I was just wondering if you have seen any difference in their coats. I am loving the results I am having with the EVO kibble. Their stools have not been soft or runny. But, their coats still feel dry and are so fly-away. And Kodi is going through his allergy itchies. They will not eat if I add any type of fish oil to their food. I'd just like some feed back, because it is not cheap.

I'm proud of you too, Missy! You handled raw and are saving in the process. PLUS, the boys are happy and well. It makes sense and, why not?

My homemade raw mix is messy so I definitely have to wash the boys' faces afterwards, and I haven't had any in a month or more, but now I'll only wash them if they've eaten a particularly meaty bone. but hey...... whatever works, my friend!

Michele, I assume you are talking about the Pawier? (gallon $425...YIKES) no I got the more affordable 2 ounces to try. I have not noticed anything in their coats yet-- but they both seem to have more energy and be more playful (jasper actually pulled a tissue out of a waste basket and shredded it-- first time he's done anything like that in years.) And I am pretty sure now that Jas' eyes are less gunky. And it may be my imagination-- but Jas seems less agitated at the mail and cars too...

I am glad the Evo is working well for Kodi and Shelby... that was another one that Cash blew up on.

Marj, yes-- so far this is working. Jasper still gets his crappy Royal Canin in the morning... but he is getting the raw at night. And I started that well before I started any of the supplements so I do credit the raw with too with his energy.

One thing I learned too... Veggies should be lightly cooked if you are adding more than a treat to fill them up. The boys poops have been much better since cooking their greenbeans.

yet another tip from the OCD CDL

Hey if I can't laugh at myself... Every one says Sea Pet fish liquid fish oil is absolutely the best for our guys as it is the only one with enough vitamin e in already in it... But I can't stand the smell as it gets all over their beards and then all over my floor and furniture. So, I tried the fish oil capsules...but if you use them you are also supposed to supplement with vitamin E...which, if your boys don't take pills easily is pain in the butt or a lot of extra cheese (calories) to get it down them.

So I tried freezing the Sea Pet liquid--thinking if it worked I could make a bunch of those mini ice cubes and pop them one and they would swallow it whole! Well good fish oil does not freeze! but it does turn into a butter like consistency ... so tonight, I took a small piece of 100% whole wheat bread and spread the 1/2 tsp of frozen fish oil on the bread rolled it up and it was gone in a flash!

Of course I wonder if that small bit of bread a day will freak out Cash's metabolism, and make Jasper's tear stains worse...

Anyways-- that's the OCD tip for the day...

and an update on Pawier...not so impressed. the initial energy boost wore off I did not notice any difference and Jaspers tear stains did not really improve so I do not think it is worth the money. I will stick with the Vitamin B supplement that Sabine suggested.

And the boys are still doing great! Jasper is now on 100% raw diet along with Cash(good bye Rpyal Canin (for now))...and man o man... that finicky dog is a thing of the past!!! he even begs now while it thawing.

Have not weighed Cash again...But even with his fur grown in again I can feel his ribs more!!!

I got the same oil but haven't opened it yet. Last night I tried the Vitamin B that Sabine recommended and it is so messy! It's a bright yellow color that stained my hand and got all over Scooter's mouth. He lapped it up from my hand but it sure made a mess! How do you give messy stuff like that? I don't want that stuff staining things in the house!

Don't feel lonely Missy, my whole family tells me all the time I'm OCD. DH caught me vacuuming the curtains and was hysterical laughing!

Ann, did Sabine recommend vitamin b capsules? I just take the Capsule and wrap it in cheese (mush the cheese together)and they eat the whole thing, since B is water soluable you cannot give too much (but my boys are 20 lbers) It is labor intensive. and I do it to the acidophilus too which are tiny. I do all the suppliments in the am. The mess thing was why I tried the the Pawier since it is mostly b-vitamins and a liquid you just drop on their food. But I noticed that Jasper was getting a bit more sensitive to touch and thought it could have something to do with the Pawier so I went back to what Sabine suggested. (she was wary of the Vit K in the pawier)

What we do to keep these boys in our lives....you have allergies too right? luckily my curtains are washable cotton...I am waiting for the pollen to be gone before I take them down and wash them-- labor intensive ironing....but yup they are on my list. Now if I could just figure out how to keep my couch clean?

So glad to hear both of your boys are doing well Missy. When I start to get discouraged in figuring out all of Tess' issues I think of you and everything you've been through and tell myself "remember Missy's perseverence". It helps! Hmmmm, maybe a better idea is to send Tess to you and let you get her straightened out!!!

Oh Jill, I am honored that I am your inspiration-- but you do way more for your little angels than I do for the boys.. most of what I do for them is because of my own neurosis. But If you want to send Tess to me.... how could I refuse a visit from that little munchkin.
