Thoughts on a backpack or front carrier for bike rides?

We love to take leisurely rides to the local ice cream shop, which is a dog friendly place. We went last night and hated leaving Truman behind. I see they make carriers as a backpack style and the pup wouldn't be able to jump out. Wondering if anyone has done this or if this is silly/dangerous? We are first time dog owners so thought I would get some input here

Hi April, some of use backpacks and MarinaGirl uses both both a backpack and a basket to transport Miss Emmie. I'm sure she'll weigh in on this thread, but you can look at this forum thread and get some input in advance of that.

I had a front basket for Django and it was very difficult to keep my balance. Whatever you end up with, my suggestion is that you put two phone books in the basket and take it for a ride before you put your pup in the basket, it will give you an idea of what it will feel like to ride around with your dog.

cycling with dogs

My son cycles with his dogs in baskets and this is downtown in a big city! I think whether with basket or backpack, it would depend entirely on both the cyclist and the dog. Practicing with phone books is a great idea, and then practicing with the dog first in quiet areas too (passing other dogs etc.)

I take Emmie for bike rides. Here are a couple of pictures I took yesterday (pink bike) and a couple from a trip to Huntington Beach this summer (orange bike).

Emmie and I like to ride around my urban neighborhood - it's a fun way to run errands on the weekend and everyone gets a kick out of seeing her in the bike basket. I often take her to a local elementary school on Saturday mornings (when there are no kids around) so she can run around; she loves to run next to me while I'm riding the bike on the school blacktop. She's also pretty good at running next to the bike while attached to a long leash.

Oh my goodness, doesn't she just look as snug and happy as can be?! She's a lucky girl.
