Mae's Spay

Hi Everyone! I thought I'd share my experiences with how things are going with Mae's recovery and mention something I hadn't planned for. To start off my vet didn't tell me to have her fast before her pre-op blood work which sent off red flags galore and delays until we did a further fasting test to make sure everything was in order. Mae's initial blood work showed elevated levels of protein so further testing was done, even though I mentioned that she did eat about an hour before the test. I went back to the vet the next day for a fasting blood test and an AM urine sample. This blood work came back much more normal but Mae was diagnosed with a UTI with her urine sample so she was put on round of antibiotics. For those of you planning on getting blood work done please ask your vet if it should be a fasting test. Mae got the "all clear" on this second round of blood work. Just to complicate things my vet was having surgery so Mae had her procedure done by another vet that my vet recommended. After I did my homework I came to the conclusion that Mae would be in good hands with this other vet. I'm actually really happy I have experience with a second vet that I liked in case I ever need a second opinion and she was really helpful with her insight on Mae's initial blood work results. So now fast forward. Mae's physical recovery has gone very well, better then expected. I waited until Mae went through a first heat to get spayed which concerned me with a harder time getting back to her normal self. A few days into her spay Mae started carrying around her toys and whimpering. She took over Timmy's crate and proceeded to dig out a nest and carry every toy she could find into this nest. She wouldn't leave the crate unless I physically went in and took her out so she could go out and do her business. She stopped eating breakfast. To tell you the truth I was kind of happy she was hanging out in the crate that was where she was supposed to be anyway. Over the past couple days Mae has carried all these toys from the crate to the couch and back again depending on the time of day. I did a little research and called the vet and we came to the conclusion that she is experiencing a false pregnancy. This situation was caused by a drastic change in hormone levels and will hopefully work itself out in the next couple weeks. Until then we have a new brood of toys that Mae very actively preens, coddles and watches over very closely. I tried to hide a couple and she knew they were missing and looked aimlessly until I replaced them. I have taken a couple of her favorite toys upstairs at night because one night she woke up whimpering for what I though was a potty break and turned out to be a crate check, downstairs. Not only was poor Mae going through the physical recovery of the spay which means no walks or free walking out back but also had this emotional roller coaster, phew poor girlie! Onsies and neck doughnuts were a NIGHTMARE in the hair matting department so I used a belly band, awesome since she didn't have much hair on her stomach anyway to matt. And one last thing I forgot to mention was that Mae celebrated her first birthday the end of August and she happily celebrated with us which included Timmy the best big brother in the world. Thanks for listening to my long winded post but I know this forum has been so helpful for me in the past and I'm hoping I might help others with what they might encounter with their pup.

Mae is such a sweetheart. The belly band is a wonderful idea. I remember the matting well with the onsie. Well wishes to Mae and feel better soon.

I hope Princess Mae feels better soon. She's such a cutie and I loved hearing about how well she's caring for her precious "babies."
