Help! Sore red bottom (vet appointment today)

I took the kids out of state for 4 days over the Easter holiday. My husband had to work, so he stayed home with Baxter. Baxter had diarreah by the time I got back and we figured it was just a nervous tummy since he's so attached to me.

Well, now a couple of days have gone by....still loose stools (I've given him pumpkin and brown rice and it has helped a bit) but we also noticed today his bottom is red with an absess looking thing (kind of bloody looking) there. I have an appointment with the vet, but am wondering, has anyone experienced this with their hav? What is it?

I saw an article of a Hav that sat on a brown recluse spider and had this type of reaction. I hope he's ok. Please let us know what the vet says.

Poor Baxter. I don't know what that is, but I hope he feels better soon. It will be interesting to see what the vet has to say.

I am no expert, but my guess would be an abcessed anal sac- no fun!

That was my thought to Katie. Anal gland abcess. Get him right in to the vet! I do hope he is feeling better very soon.

When I was googling this morning here at work that was what I came up with too....Anal gland abcess. He doesn't seem like he's in pain....he's been eating, playing, walking, etc. but it LOOKS like it's got to hurt so much

A dog in our neighborhood has anal gland problems and she has to go once a month to get it drained and had to change her dogs food. Hope this is just a 1 time thing for little Baxter and he gets better fast.

Good luck, let us know how it goes. He is so sweet, beautiful coloring with the white and brown, milk chocolate swirl.

Murphy has had runny poo for over a week due to giardia and when the vet checked him out she said to watch for any problems in that area because when they have diarrhea their anal glands don't get expressed naturally. We were careful to rinse off anything stuck to him and pat the area dry so it wouldn't be more irritated. Hopefully it's just from that and he'll be better in no time!
Please let us know what the vet says.
