Puppy Info Overload

I've about hit a wall with all the reading and researching I've been doing on products, training, vaccinations, foods, poop eating, fleas, grooming......and I don't even have her yet. It's starting to take the fun out of it, and I think I need to find a happy medium between being prepared but not overwhelmed with too much information.

I had this crazy dream last night that the breeder brought the litter to our house, and Violet was like the size of a really enormous cocker spaniel and looked like a Sharpei - though it was her hair all in matted, wave-like clumps, and she was fat and heavy - lol! (I think I was reading about blowing coat and mats the day before). In the dream I was like, "oh, this isn't want I wanted...." lol! But then I took my fancy silver comb out and realized I could comb right through them and she got 50% smaller and looked like a gorgeous silky Hav. That's a good omen, right?

Diane, I suggest you take a step back and stop thinking about puppy things for a while - I know, I know, easier said than done. I do think you're way prepared and will be wonderful with your puppy but maybe taking some time to do things for YOU will be more beneficial right now. Once Violet comes you'll see how your whole world will be about her for at least the first month or so... probably even longer (with Hitchcock I was a lot more calm as I already had Kubrick but with Kubrick it took at least a month and a half before I was ready to move on from "puppy world 24/7"). Before she comes is just the time to do things for you that you think you won't be able to do with the puppy. If you enjoy cooking, make fancy dinners or try new recipes that you know will take some time. Invest yourself in your work, find a new hobby or pick up an old one. Of course you can still do puppy research, but perhaps take a step back and slow down a bit for your own sanity.

That being said, I do think your dream was a good omen for you as a dog owner, but your poor breeder! I'm sure she's much better than she came off in that dream, LOL.

I know how you feel. It does get overwhelming, although don't think I have dreamt about it yet. But my puppy is only 12 days old so plenty of time for that.

Diane,

I echo what Lina said. In fact, make a point of going out and staying out for hours and hours with no pressure to return home. This ability will change big time and not get better for quite a while.

Diane-Go get a manicure and pedicure, pick up a new book and relax! It is overwhelming but you're so prepared that your puppy is going to have everything she needs.

LOL! Thanks you guys, actually I have been trying to do that - complete projects, etc, but the time has just flown by and I'm so behind because I've spent so many hours on puppy related research, supplies shopping, etc. It'll be all I can do just to get caught up on the basics, I'm afraid. So much for cleaning out the basement and having the veggie garden mostly planted before she comes!

I do, however, have a downtown "art and culture" day planned with a couple artist friends. We have done this a few times in the past year, so I'm looking forward to that. Detroit Art Institute and some galleries, lunch. It'll be the last one till at least next Fall, if not next year, I'm sure.

At least I can take her with me to the summer art fairs and festivals. I'll have to figure out what sort of gear I need for her for long, warm weather outings like that.

You're still doing it! I had puppy on the brain too, drove DH crazy both times so you're not alone.

Have fun on your day out with friends!!!

Diane, LOL, you're doing it again! You don't need anything for that. What do you need but a bottle of water and a collapsible bowl? Or even just a bottle of water by itself... Kubrick LOVES to drink from a bottle. I really do think you're over thinking this by trying to do the best for her but really dogs don't really NEED all the stuff we get for them half the time. I would strongly suggest you stop buying things. I'm pretty sure you already have all the necessities by now and if you really really forgot something then go ahead and get it, but make sure it's something that is a NECESSITY and NOT just because you think she might need it someday. You'll find out after you get Violet what you may or may not need and can work from there. I found a lot of the things I bought pre-Kubrick were completely unnecessary and found some other things that I didn't think were necessary but were. He didn't die (or even become scarred for life) because he had to wait a week or so for those items to arrive from online stores. The number one thing your puppy needs from you (other than food and water, of course) is your attention and discipline. The other things are just extras... sometimes useful extras, but extras nonetheless.

Seriously, stop thinking so much and have some fun before you become even more puppy-brained!

Ok you guys, good point - lol! Geez, what is wrong with me.

Well I'm ALMOST done shopping, and no doubt she'll reject half of the gazillion toys I already bought, but there are a couple miscellaneous necessities (honest) I still have to buy.

Somehow I feel like I gotta have that bottle of cedar oil spray ready just in case a flea jumps off her, and a whole grooming set up in case of an emergency butt bath!! A little OCD you think? lol!

Boy, when you think about what most people DON'T do for their dogs, this all sounds pretty over the top.

My family and a few of my friends think it's crazy that getting a dog is such a big friggin deal to me. They all have kids and I don't, so, you know, I have no frame of reference for that level of responsibility and being able to go with the flo....
