Summer Eating?

Dexter used to eat 1/2 cup of food twice a day without problems and now for the past several days he has not eaten all his food. I would guess he is eating about 1/3 cup of food at each feeding.

Dexter is not a chow hound and will only eat when he wants to and he is not getting lots of treats during the day. Dexter is almost 7 months and about 9 1/2 pounds, he is not underweight or overweight.

Question: Am I feeding Dexter too much?
Do older dogs eat less than a puppy?

Do dogs eat less when the weather is warmer?

What are your experiences with your Hav's eating amounts?

hi Lynda, Molly is on 250 calories so that is difficult to answer. Hot weather can curb their appetite. Are you feeding kibble?

I shoot for 1/3 cup twice a day for Moxie and he devours it and is a perfect weight.

Dexter is eating "The Call of the Wild," kibble. We moisten the dry kibble with just a little with water.

I do think Jackson stopped eating quite as much when he quit growing so rapidly at about nine months. He is right at 14.5 pounds, and eats about 1/4 cup dry kibble in the am, and 1/2 - 3/4 cup mixed wet and dry at night. He also gets a lot of treats when we're training, grooming, etc., but on quiet days he might not need as many. I do think his appetite is best when he is really active. I also understand they can get picky as they get older. Having a another dog around helps Jackson finish quickly or his meal will be gone!

I meant to add, if you think Dexter is getting picky, you might want to try and add a little wet canned foot on top of his kibble . . . I bet he will gobble it right up! They do get bored with the same thing day after day, but both my boys love the canned Merrick and it comes in so many differnt varieties so they can have lots of choices. I wouldn't worry, though, if Dexter's eating is off . . . they eat when they are hungry.

Dexter is very active when he wants to be and then crashes! We walk Dexter 1-2 times a day, so he gets plenty of exercise.

Dexter has always be a slow...........eater. I change the food whenever the 3 pound bag of food is empty.

I think I am going to try 1/3 cup of food for a few days and see how Dexter does.

I noticed the same thing with Mochi and she's about a month younger than Dexter. She stopped finishing her food and just today I decided to cut her down to 1/3 cup twice a day. I thought her loss in appetite was because I changed her kibble but I guess it may just be the stage they are at now.

The vet explained it to me that just like people, their metabolism is faster when they're puppies. As they grow it slows down so their need for food will probably stay about the same or even decrease slightly.

We add about a tablespoon of Merrick canned food and my guys love it. We use buffalo kibble so I add either chicken or turkey canned.

I'm always worried about whether they're eating enough or too much!

While Dash is over a year now, he is actually eating more this summer but I think it is because he is a bit more active. I went thru a terrible picky spell with him during adolescents but now he is the chow hound of the group. I make some food each week and mix it in with his kibble and I can't remember the last time, he didn't eat it all. I leave plain dry kibble out and give them one meal mid day now. Dash gets a half of cup and engulfs it unless you put something new and he kind of freaks out. He really is OCD about things. I mixed in new kibble with my evo- tow. Dash picked out every single tow kibble and didnt eat it.
