Ugh...some people are so dumb!

I'm in Florida for the week visiting my parents with the pups of course. I found a great dog park here last year and thought it would be a nice change for T&M since they've been on a leash for the past few days. We had a great time, great dogs and for the most part great people. We played with lots of Bichons and Mini Poodles but towards the end we got another Havie. He was a very cute chocolate parti big boy who weighed about 20 pounds. I chatted with the owner and we chuckled about how similar their play styles were. She then proceeded to tell me they weren't going to get him neutered because he has such a nice demeanor and they were sure if he ever produced puppies she would have no problem finding homes for them but she's having problems finding him a mate duh... I proceeded to tell her that I doubted any reputable breeder would allow that breeding to happen and that health testing is also very important. I didn't even ask if she was considering a female Havanese because I couldn't even believe my ears to begin with. I was also wondering if she signed a contract with the breeder. Lots of unknowns but I think I'm better off with that, just dumbfounded that there are people out there who even consider doing something like that.

There are stupid people everywhere. We have a neighbor with a husky/shepherd cross. He has bred her several times... Always to other mutts... Because "she's such a nice dog, we should maintain the line."

One time I was speaking in Ottowa and visited a pet store. There was an add in the window for a "fluffy little dog" "stud" (no breed listed, so I assume it was a mutt). They were looking for a female "fluffy dog" (they listed several breeds and "designer breeds" as examples) to breed him to. Oy Vey!

Honestly, nothing much surprises me any more when it comes to dumb; I think there is a great lack of even basic science education that might alert people to a modicum of understanding of the very basics of genetics, and perhaps make them consider that a good breeder might have done some homework. It seems to be a kind of game to some people, the idea of getting Fluffy together with some other Fluffy and making little Fluffballs. I'm not sure some people even think of Fluffy as being a living creature with a complicated genome. The world is full of amateurishness and an ignorance of, or even disdain for expertise. Ignorance is fine - we are all ignorant of all sorts of subjects outside our own realms - as long as, should you want to venture into a massively complex subject such as breeding, you have the good manners to acknowledge your ignorance and either do some serious learning or keep out of territory in which your ignorance could cause untold damage.
