Maccabee Update

Maccabee went for his annual check-up and dental cleaning yeaterday. His blood work came back "perfect." He is up to 10 pounds! When he was diagnosed with the liver shunt he was hovering around 8 pounds. The vet thinks his weight is perfect. His teeth are fine and jsut needed a standard cleaning.

Of course, anxious Maccabee was a trembling wreck when we arrived at the vet's office -- even with his morning dose of Xanax and Prozac onboard. He calmed down toward the end of his exam. They said he did fine with everything, but I never saw him so glad to leave someplace as he was to leave the vet's office. I walked him to a grassy area to do his business, but he was all about getting back to the car and into his carseat.

Last night was a little rough for him. He looked sad and walked around with his tail down. He didn't want to eat his dinner, but he gladly shared a banana with me. While I was cooking, I asked my daughter to offer him more banana, but he refused it. He slept through the night, but was still "off" this morning. He didn't do his "breakfast dance" but he did eat his food this morning.

I hope he is back to his normal crazy self this evening. If he's still acting off, I'll call the vet. Maybe his teeth are sore from the cleaning or maybe the anesthesia was rough on him. Do your dogs bounce back pretty quickly from their dental cleanings?

I guess the short version is: Maccabee is healthy and has clean teeth.

So glad to hear Maccabee is doing well! I can't tell you about cleaning after-effects, though. Kodi's teeth are brushed regularly and although he is close to 6 years old, the vet continues to say that his teeth look great and to "continue doing what we're doing".

He may be still feeling off because of the combination of Prozac, Xanax, and anesthesia, and his mouth may hurt a bit. I would call the Vet's office to ask about his after-effects. What would it hurt?

So happy to hear that Maccabee is thriving and up to 10 lbs! Emmie had her teeth cleaned a few months ago and I don't recall her being off afterwards; however, she's not on any medication so that might be the difference. As Starr mentions above, Maccabee's response may be due to the Prozac, Xanax, AND anesthesia.

When Scout had his teeth cleaned he was drowsy the first night and back to normal the next day. It is probably the combination of Xanax, Prozac and anesthesia. Good to hear your little guy is doing so well.

Glad for the update on Maccabee. Great news that he's gained weight and had normal blood work. He deserves a break.

Hopefully he is feeling better today.
