An update on our Benny

Hi all! I wanted to do a quick update on our Benny, who I can't believe will be turning one year old next month! Benny makes everyone so happy. He's funny, quirky, and rolls with all the punches.

Benny has lived at his breeders, then in an apartment in Virginia where he rode the metro in DC. He's flown twice with us, once for a florida vacation, and then one more time when we moved to Florida permanently. We moved into an apartment, and then 3 months later we moved into our newly bought house.

I feel like benny has gone through so much in his short life! Benny loves visitors at the house, his grandparents, bully sticks, and sleeping with his stuffed animal in our bed. He enjoys car rides, home improvement and shopping at Lowes, and big sister (my parents beagle) Maxie.

He is super affectionate and loves to cuddle. He likes bath time, and sometimes gets in the shower with me if he can lol. He still is quite annoyed at things being out of place and will bark if we leave something out that isn't supposed to be there haha. He also hates the vacumm so I have to clean when my husband is home so he could keep him off of Darth Vacumm.

I work from home and he makes it so easy during the day. He knows mom works and to stay quiet and relax and he gets a super long walk for being good. Last week I had the worst cold and it was if he knew that I wasn't myself. He was quite the therapy dog. People are just amazed at his intelligence and sweet disposition. We love him so much!

Last thing-- I had a really hard time accepting that he came from Liz Vargo just a year ago. We really did so much research and felt so comfortable with Liz. I felt proud of my decision and when we found out what happened, I felt a lot of guilt and sadness. I feel like I "rescued" him now rather than getting him from a breeder. I'm ok with this as we really lucked out with a beautiful and happy puppy who is just so smart and shows us so much love.

I check in often but am much more in tune to the facebook group. Thank you for being such a great support system. I've learned so much from all of you!

What a sweetheart. I had to google Liz Vargo. How sad and tragic. How did she get by with it, I wonder. I am so glad you rescued your sweet baby. Sounds like he has adjusted well and he is adorable!!

I'm not on the facebook group at all- I like to forum format as it allows for more considered responses. Anyway I am new to the Havanese world but the Liz Vargo thing was quite a shocker. Looks like she was a judge and had a reasonably good reputation. I don't know the details obviously but people can very quickly start getting ill- look at the good natured folks on Animal Hoarders. And just think if you had so many animals going and you suddenly got an injury. Any way, I am not making excuses for what she did, and it's heinous- but I think it's great that little Benny is so awesome, and it shows that her stock are probably pretty awesome, it just got too nuts and fell out of control for some reason.

Anyway just my thoughts on it; I'm sure I would be feeling the same if I were you!

I get incensed when I hear about cases like this. We live in Alberta, Canada and just last week a woman had over 200 dogs taken and this wasn't her first time. She had dogs seized twice before and in total there were 319 dogs abused by this woman. The most recent seizure of the 200 was horrific. Dogs were starving, chained to vehicles, extremely dehydrated and very sick. Some had to be put down for humane reasons. Some had broken bones. I have no sympathy for these people. I am hoping this woman receives jail time. Another animal abuse case recently settled in court in British Columbia sentenced the offender to 6 months in jail along with fines and severe restrictions about her contact with animals. I hope this is a sign in our country that animal abusers will get more serious sentences for their crimes.

Please keep in mind that NONE of Liz Vargo's dogs were starving or were not given water. She clearly had more than she could care for properly,, the facilities were dirty and some (not all) of the dogs were severly matted. But we also know how FAST that can happen with Havanese... Even when you just have one, single pet.

I agree with Naturelover. I am not making excuses for Liz Vargo, but I can see how this sort of thing can happen. Mental illness is an insidious thing. I feel for the dogs and I feel for her. I do NOT think her case can be put in the same category as someone who is allowing dogs to starve, chaining them from vehicles and not getting medical attention for them when they are ill. That is a whole order beyond what was going on with Liz Vargo as I read it.

In any case, Benny is adorable, and I'm glad he was out of there before things really went south! He looks and sounds like he is everything a Havanese should be!

I completely agree with you Karen. Benny is highly social, very healthy, and obviously cared for well in those short 12.5 weeks with Liz. I really feel for Liz and hope she gets better. This was in no way a puppy mill, and that's what I had to remind myself when I saw the things people were posting on the Facebook group. I felt a bit shamed for getting Benny through her. Things just got overwhelming for her. I hope she can heal from this and takes care of herself. I hope all those pups get loving homes.

I, too, feel bad for Liz. One of her dogs was the sire of my first Havanese, Bailey, and when I spoke with her about a concern that I had, prior to getting him (way back in the 90's), she had had a fire in her kennels and lost some of her dogs. Seems as though her bad luck has continued. Hope things go better for her and she is getting the help she needs. (She was not, however, Bailey's breeder).

Glad Benny turned out to be everything that he is and everything you wanted. He is
adorable. Enjoy him!

You should NEVER feel shamed about where you got a dog that you already own, unless you KNOWINGLY went and purchased from a puppy mill/pet store. (which I know is NOT the case with you!) Most people make better choices when they are better informed, but in your case, I don't even think that is the issue. How were you to know that this woman, with a LONG track record in the Havanese world would have such a problem AFTER you got your dog?

As Maya Angelou said, "When we know better, we do better." But in this case, I don't think you HAD any way of knowing what was going to happen.

Karen, the articles I found on Liz made her sound very much like a puppy mill and I am sorry if that is not the case. You obviously know a lot more about this situation than the writers of the articles I read. My anger is definitely directed to those people who are intentionally abusive to animals and from what you are saying that is not the case with this woman. I agree with all of you that Benny is definitely a wonderful little man and Joanna do not feel anything but proud of that beautiful little boy. He is a pup any of us would be proud to have.
