We're moving in just two weeks to Brooklyn and we are very excited about the move as we'll have our very own private roof deck (about 200 sq feet) that we're sure the dogs will just love to run around in! I know there's a lot of great old topics on how to make the move smooth for your dog and I've read them all and will definitely take their bed and favorite toys/chews with me in the car so I can get them situated to the new place quickly (sadly, I can't go visit it with them earlier than the move in date as we're just renting, not buying) but I didn't see any type of advice on how to actually deal with the move in day? I'm worried because we're hiring movers who will actually come the day before and pack up the whole house for us - I am SO HAPPY that I don't have to pack a single box!!! - and then the day of do all the moving into the new place. I'm not sure what to do with the dogs during this process. Should I leave them locked up in the expen when the movers are packing or let them run free? I'm not worried about them running out of my apartment that I currently live in, but I'm not sure if it will be stressful and/or confusing for them to have all these strange men packing up the house into boxes (the movers estimate it will take at least 100 boxes!). I can't leave the house while they're packing, so I have to be present at all times. On the actual move-in day my husband will be around so I will be able to maybe take them on a walk or something so we're out of the house for a portion of the move, but I'm not sure if that's even something I should be doing? I don't want to close them into a strange room but I don't know what else to do as our gates won't have been put up yet and the movers will most likely have the door open the whole time.

Any ideas???

I've moved a couple of times, so here's my experience for what's it worth. Once when I moved, I had my dogs in a segregated area of the yard during the move; the second time, my next door neighbor (who loved them and vice versa and with whom they'd stayed before so it was familiar to them) took them to her house.

They were MUCH less stressed the time they stayed at my neighbor's house than when I had them at the house during the move -- they got very upset seeing strangers empty out our house and seeing the house vacant, so I'll never go that route again.

Good luck -- sounds like it will all be worth it in the end.

Can they have a play date and maybe a sleepover, then you come and get them and take them to the new place?

I would try to arrange a play day where they could be out of the house if possible. Otherwise I think you'll be fine with them there as long as they have you with them.

Congratulations on the move. That's exciting.

Hi Carolina!

How exciting! Personally, I would keep the dogs in another part of the house (or arrange for a playdate) while the packers are there. With all the commotion, I would be concerned that they might get stepped on or accidentally bumped. You know these Havs - they have to be in the MIDDLE of everything! With tape, boxes, knives everywhere.....just too dangerous!

Can't wait to see photos of your new place (even if it is just in the background of your Kubrick/Hitchcock photos)!

Carolina, congrats on your new place. I do not know from any experience with my pups... but if it were me I would try to find a place for them for the two days-- and then just bring them to their new home with all their familiar stuff there. Could they stay maybe with Guapo? Or you could send them to me for a couple of days

Carolina, congratulations on your new place! As others have suggested, I would recommend a playdate for the furkids on the day of packing.

Best, Poornima

I would also recommend a playdate for the furkids on the day of packing---neither of you need that extra stress!

Sally,((Oliver)) Comet and Pennie too!
