Question HATES the CAR

Hello,

My havanese Circuit is 6 months. He is reaaly good boy and sweet. He doesn;t have a problem with his crate but he HATES the car. Example: I take him to training at the local Petsmart and when class finishes and he approchs the door I literaly have to force hime out the door because he knows that class is over and hes going in the car. I swaer I have only ever taken him to good fun places like the dog park or petsmart . I have so far only taken him once to the vet. Is this normal any times or timely when he will get better? Any word would be greatly appericated.

Thank you

Hi! Welcome to the forum. We would love to learn more about Circuit and see pictures of him.

From what I have experienced with Jackson and read here, many Havs have trouble with the car . . . some grow out of it and mine still whines like crazy but eventually settles down. We had problems with car sickness, so we tried Cerenia from the vet which seems to help with that. Some Havs have a problem with visuals in the car (the scenery flying by makes them nauseated), and this drug addresses that. We also don't feed him before a long car trip.

Do you have him in a crate or doggie car seat? Some dogs like to look out, and we have a car seat that allows him to look out the window. He also likes to have the window cracked to get fresh air. If you search on this site for "car sickness" or similar words, you should be able to find some threads with ideas. Good luck and let us know more about Circuit!!

Bentley hates to ride in the car as well. He whines and howls. I am trying different things, letting him look out the window, keeping him lower so he can't see out in case it is the motion he doesn't like, trying him in his crate...so far not much success. I am hoping with time he will just get used to it. I wish I had a good answer for you, only to let you know you are not alone.

Biscuit hates the car, too. Whines & fusses. Heathy loves it & it puts him to sleep. Go figure.
They do enjoy sitting together in their Outlook carseat, so they can look out the window. I say take him in the car as often as possible and give treats. They do tend to improve as they outgrow the puppy stage.

Tugger hated the car too and would throw up. We have persevered over the year and he has gotten better so keep it up. We only went to fun places and didn't feed him before trips. He will now settle after a while in the car and has not thrown for some time. We took him for a 5 hour car trip and on a few trips to the cottage and he has been okay. He actually likes getting into the car now but will still whine and pant for the start of the trip. He is best sitting on the seat (rather than in someone's lap) and looking out the front window. When he is in the back he sits in the middle and looks out the front.

Mine do ok, I put a blanket on the front seat and they sit there together. I just bought a FidoRido car seat but haven't used it for them yet. Sorry he doesn't like it.

Oliver was the same way and was only happy in my lap (which wasn't allowed since I was the driver)
It got better around the time he turned a year

Henry hates the car and pulls his leash away when he sees me heading in that direction. As a pup, he would vomit something terrible. I now have to starve him before we go anywhere, so it is best to leave first thing in the morning.

I really find it insulting since I am not trying to hurt him you know.
The other thing is that I tried so many methods: special car seat, special seat belt, a safety tunnel for him. He pulled and pulled and pulled to get to my lap.

I finally had to put the crate in the back seat, strap it down and now he sits in the crate with a puss on his face. Yup he has to be driven around like a little circus animal, ugh.

Jackson whined all the way to the vet's today, and when I turned around to look at him, he had a big grin on his face, the little stinker!
