special needs puppy

I am in the process of re-homing two cats that we have custody of. A relative of my husband has just gone into a nursing home after a fall and since we have power of attorney and she's not going back home, we need to find homes for the cats. Anyway, I was on a website for a no-kill shelter nearby and found this. It's so sad:

That is very sad. The only good part is, the puppy has no idea that he's any different from any other puppy.
I hope they find a wonderful home for him. He sure is cute.

I know! I saw his picture first and wondered how it could be that this adorable puppy was sent to a shelter. I wish I could snuggle with him.

The sad thing is that many good homes will not even be considered. I fall into every criteria except that my daughter is 9, not 12. She is actually one of the best children around animals I know. She has trained her cat to come, sit, sit up pretty, and speak on command. She is so good with animals, but their inflexible rules would never allow me to adopt this puppy. I have had lots of experience with blind dogs too. I am not writing because I necessarily was planning on adopting this dog, but the fact is there is no leniency in many rescue organizations which eliminates many good potential homes. That is sad to me.

I do not want to come across as negative because I know the intent of the rules. I just wish there would be exceptions made in cases where homes are hard to find.

What a little cutie he is. Too bad he is in NY. Karen you are so right, sometimes the rules should be broken. Of course they have no way of knowing just how wonderful your daughter is.
