Are tear stains genetic?

I saw this puppy and wish I could have another dog. He's about 3 months old and has NO tear stains on that light face. I know his breeder and asked her how she did it and expected to hear how she deals with staining and instead found out that she has lines that don't get tear stains. There are dogs I've never heard of in the pedigree but sure am interested in them after seeing him. I've got to pick her brain now I hope this link takes you to him. My internet explorer got messed up in yesterday's storm and keeps shutting down so I don't dare click on any links. grrrrrrr Hopefully this will post...here's the boy. Oh I like him! http://ahavapicaro.homestead.com/litterpage.html

He's cute!
But I wonder, since you are looking at him through a breeder's eyes, what appeals to you so much?
I know that the tear-free thing is important, but what else do you love about him?
Just curious And trying to educate myself.

Didn't Arlene (Peluito Havanese) said once that she's never had problems with boogie's tear stains? or am I making this up?

I can't click on a link out of the forum or my internet browser will shut down so I can't go back to the picture to fully explain it. A lot of it has to do with his breeder. I have great respect for her

He is adorable, and such a clean face! Tear staining was one of the big reasons we went with a pup with a black face.

I actually had contact with this breeder when I was choosing one and I was very impressed with her. Unfortunately she was very difficult to get to from Boston.

Awwwww....he looks JUST like Miley did (minus the tear stains) at that age!! Wish they could stay cute, fluffy, and little like that. There's just an "innocent" look to a puppy.

I have read where the tear staining is genetic. I would guess there is truth to that.

Renee, Miley, & Copper too!

He eat and live exactely as my other dogs...and share some of the lines too...
I think that tearstain have multipple factors involved...wher genetic is one of them...

Is he a Bolonka or a Havanese?

I think tear staining is partially genetic and if you want to read endlessly just google maltese and tear staining. Belle gets it horrible during the spring. Some dogs you can do anything and everything to and they still get it. Others don't ever get it. I think like a lot of things breeders will breed no tear stains to no tear stains to hopefully achieve the result as well.

Thinking of adding a Neezer, check out this thread!
