Further Adventures of Ricky Ricardo

We have fiestas (parties) all the time here in Mexico and I am a party animal . Last night I was invited to a fiesta with Momi and Popi. The fiesta had 6 Canadian peoples from Edmonton. Canadian peoples are mucho friendly. I had a great time! Popi got a little bossy when I jumped onto my new friend peoples laps and tried to eat out their plates. Like, chill out Popi!He went back to our casa and got me a bully stick. That was fine with me because I like to chew on my bully stick and leave other peoples alone. My one friend Canadian people guy said, "Ricky really likes chewing on his bone." My Popi says, "OH, is that what you call them in Canada?" Canadian woman peoples say, "We don't get it." Then Popi explain to them what bully stick is. Canadian woman peoples all turn bright red and Canadian guy peoples all laughing like loco!

besos, Ricky Ricardo

Molly wishes she could be partying in Mexico with you, Ricky. We are having another winter storm here this weekend and the wind chill will be 35 degrees below zero. Brrrr!!!

Tell your Popi that's NOT an appropriate subject for the dinner table!

Haha! I just googled bully stick. I saw them for sale in Costco and thought of getting one for Sheba. They looked awfully big. Now I know why.

Today, I met COCO Chanel, for the first time, a 14 week old Chocolate Havanese, who is mi neighbor in Mexico. She lives with her Momi and Popi in Colorado part of the year and then in Mexico part of the year. Believe it or not, this was her first playdate ever with any doggie! Ricky Ricardo had to show her the ropes on how to play. CoCo play real good at rough and tumble and RLH. She have typical Havanese personality. I think she cute!

Then CoCo Momi and mi Popi practiced mi obedience training with all the distractions going on around me. We did off-leash heel, down, sit, stay, and come. I even practice with CoCo Momi, a complete stranger, and Popi says he is surprised how well I did with someone else. When Popi give commands, I was perfect, even with Coco running around me. Popi said, "Ricky you are awesome! You graduated from first grade to second grade today." CoCo did real good with on-leash commands too, but she is more like kindergarten level.

I have a question for HF peoples. CoCo has a pinkish tan nose. Her fur is light brown and new growth is light champagne color. I think it looks like she going to be very light champagne color when an adult. CoCo Momi says the breeder told her she is Chocolate Havanese. I thought they were all dark brown. What is your opinion?

Today CoCo and me played, played, played for an hour or more. We make agreement to meet every day for more playdate. Weather is in low 80's so good weather for outside on the big lawn playdate.

(Nobody breathe a word about CoCo to Lucy back in California, otherwise Ricky in deep poo-poo!)

besos, Ricky Ricardo

Good for you, Ricky! It sounds like you were an awesome boy!!! It's very hard to breed for strong chocolate color, and good breeders are also breeding (even more importantly! for temperament, health and structure) So there are always a good number of chocolate Havanese that go to pet homes because their color, and most importantly, their pigment color isn't strong enough. But don't tell your girl friend, because she is every much as good a pet, no matter whether she has "show" type pigment or not!

BINGO! tia Karen, now it all makes sense. Coco Momi (a former Retriever breeder) say she bought Coco (her first Havanese) with the agreement that she would be spayed at the appropriate age. I don't know about health issues (nothing so far) but Coco is typical Havanese temperament and her structure is bult like Mae West! I am in love, the heck with conformance "standards"!

gracias y besos, tia Karen....Ricky Ricardo

I have a good friend who breeds really lovely Havanese of excellent quality, health tested, wonderful temperaments and raised correctly. Many of the puppies she has produced have done well in the show ring. But she didn't realize that her sire and one of her bitches carried for chocolate. When they were bred, NONE of the chocolates had good enough pigment for her to keep and show. They are LOVELY dogs, with great temperaments, good conformation, and perfectly healthy… but not show prospects. They are all in pet homes, where they are doing great, and loved to pieces!

If breeders are honest with themselves, even in the BEST breeding program, the majority of puppies bred should be sold on spay/neuter contracts. Only "the best of the best" should be bred on.

I'll tell you a little secret, Ricky, (if you PROMISE you won't tell him!!! ) Tu amigo, Kodi, as much of a super star as he is, is not "breeding" or "conformation show" quality. His nose is a little long, as are his ears… under all that hair, he's got hound dog ears!!! He's also at the tippity top of the size range… still within standard, but so close to the top that it probably wouldn't have been a good idea to breed him, even if he had been otherwise "perfect". I knew those things when I brought him home, and chose him for his other, stellar, qualities. And… it's not a "breeding problem, it's just a roll of the genetic dice. Kodi's full sister remains in the King's breeding program. She is smaller and has a "better" (typier) head. Would I rather have her? De ninguna manera, (did I say that right? I'm using Google translate!!! ) my friend! She is absolutely lovely, but my Kodi is my heart dog!!!

The pigment problems in a chocolate are very obvious, and stand out for all to see. You can't see Kodi's long ears now that he is an adult and has long hair hanging from them. There are MANY pet and performance Havanese that are not conformation or breeding prospects but are perfect for their new families in every way that matters!

And I think that is the happiest place for us doggies!

I am shocked! But hey, I would settle for hound dog ears if I could do as well in competition as Kodi does! Mi Popi has hound dog ears too, but I still love him to pieces!

And that is the way it should be.......forever Havanese with their forever families......happy and healthy........sometimes not quite "perfect" Havanese but in the perfect home situation!

This morning mi amigo Lucca, the Papillon, came to our playdate. Lucca is 4 days older than I am. We had 3 doggies out on the big lawn in front of mi casa, playing RLH, doing tricks, and creating havoc! Little CoCo still has very short legs and she can't keep up too well, but she has the desire and she can jump straight up into the air better than any doggie I know. Lucca Momi was bending ober to give Lucca treat out of her plastic baggie, so I thought it would be a good time to grab the whole baggie out of her hand and RLH It is so cute when peoples play RLH and wave their hands in the air. Lucca Momi say, "Ricky, you come here right now you travesura (prankster)!" And I say, "lo siento (sorry) I no speaky your language" and I play keep away from peoples. Mi amiga, Coco, who is also a food hound, was running 15 feet behind me! She want a piece of the loot too! Mi Popi was doubled over with laughter. Lucca Momi have no sense of humor.

Peoples were sitting on their outside balcony drinking their morning coffee and say they never saw three doggies have so much fun. They say maybe they should get a doggie like Ricky Ricardo. I say "buena suerte" (good luck) to them.

besos, Ricky Ricardo
