DNA testing

The other day I was at Petsmart and this guy came up to me and said "Oh, what a cute dog! It's rare to see Cotons". I told him Kipper was a Havanese but ever since then the question has been nagging me. When I look at pictures of Cotons they look just like him! Then again from what I've read Cotons are a little more rare than Havs so he's probably not one. Anyway...

Since I'm not savvy enough to determine whether he's really a Hav or a Coton - or any other kind of fluffy white dog - we got a DNA test at the vet! So excited to get the results!!!

Here's Kipper claiming the breakfast table as his throne.

Cottons tend to be a bit bigger and heavier built than Havanese, and their coats are more cottony… and as a result, usually harder to care for. As you mentioned, it is an even rarer breed, but they ARE in the hands of the puppy mills too, so they do show up in shelters and rescue from time to time.

Just be aware that DNA testing is FAR from an exact science. There are many breeds where they just don't have enough genetic material to make a match (that could be the case with a rare breed like the Cotons) and many younger breeds have enough genetic material that overlaps with other breeds that THAT can get in the way as well. Genetic testing can be fun, but it is nothing like a sure bet that you will ever know exactly what Kipper is… other than adorable!

Yeah, if only it was 100% accurate! But since we really don't know where Kipper came from, we figured it was worth it to have some idea of what he really might be. Also, it's now turned into a sort of game. My husband thinking he's more of a Coton and me sticking to our original thought that he's a Hav. We might turn this into a bet!

Thank you! We think so. He's a sweet little guy that loves cuddling. As I said, someone thought he was a Coton. The vet said maybe he has some poodle in him, our trainer thought Maltese/Bichon. So yeah.. lots of possibilities! I, of course, want him to be a Hav because I'd had my eye on them before I came across Kipper on the adoption website

So funny, just last night my husband was joking that he thinks our older Hav, Ginny, is really a Coton.(After watching Westminster, we started looking up dog breeds and the pictures of the Cotons and Ginny do match up ).
Of course, we know where Ginny came from (a Havanese breeder) but it is interesting that there are some significant similarities.
Ginny is 20 pounds and my vet said she is about 2 inches taller and 3-4 inches longer than any Hav she has ever seen.
Let us know what your DNA testing turns up!

Ooh, I'm so excited to find out the results from your test! Did the vet administer the test in the office? How much did it cost? I really want to get a DNA test for Kepler. It seems like every day I'm changing my mind about what he actually is. Is he a poorly bred Havanese? Is he a mix with something else? I really want to know, but I don't want to spend tons of money to find out right now.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter what kind of dog we have. They can't help their parentage and they are the same dog before and after the test, right? But curious minds really want to know!

Kepler, we miss you . . . Luna, who is not a Havanese

Mi amigo Kipper is a dead ringer for mi Popi's attorney's Coton, Charlie. Charlie is also around 20 pounds with all white cottony coat. On the other hand, Charlie is a dead ringer for Kipper the Havanese. I am just so confused! But best of all, they are BOTH mi amigos.

besos, Ricky Ricardo

They really are very similar!!! I have spent some time Googling differences and even tried to look for pictures for a side by side comparison but no luck. They are both freaking adorable for sure, though!!! I'll keep everyone posted!
