Allergic to Dogs

Hi

Apologies if this has been covered thoroughly in another thread. I had problems searching for human allergy, as opposed to allergies Havanese might suffer...

I am allergic to animals. Are there any owners who are, but have been able to cope with their Havanese? Is anyone still stuggling with allergies whilst owning a havanese? Any advice on the best treatment and antihistamines?

From my experience with my cat - I chose a 'hyperallergenic' breed - I know that temporarily spending time with a Havanese before deciding to get one, won't really tell me anything. When my kitten arrived I was constantly allergic for 6 'long' weeks and then my symptoms suddenly vanished. I think if he'd been a different breed I may not have adapted. I can only hope that I will be the same way with a Havanese!

I would absolutely suggest you go visit a breeder-
One of my last puppy buyers is severly allergic to dogs. What I did was have the family come for a visit before they decided on a puppy. I did NOT bathe my dogs before they came-and I have 6 adult Havanese here. I didn't want any symptoms to be masked by my dogs being 'clean'. They stayed for about 3 hours. He had NO symptoms at all! They did end up getting one of my puppies and are thrilled to death with her!

Hi Lau, welcome the forum! I also am very allergic to all animals, in fact I have never met a cat, any cat I could tolerate-- so I think you may be less allergic than me.

I am also allergic to all dogs, even poodles-- but I was able to take my SIL's Hav into my house for 2 weeks and then a month later another week and I was fine. So we started our search for our own... 3 years later we have two Havs and I am fine most of the time.

Here are the things I found that flared my allergies

1) when they were puppies...not the puppy itself, but potty training. The protein in urine is a strong allergen... and they step in it and leaves allergens on them... once they were potty trained I was much better. during puppydom I used allergy wipes on them once or twice a week and that helped.

2) If you have hay fever, your little fluff ball will bring in pollen in the spring and leaf mold in the fall, which could aggravate your allergies. again, during these times wiping down your Hav more often and/or keeping them in a puppy cut helps.

3) if you have another family member who can brush them that is the best, I find I get a little sniffly when I am brushing them.

4) I find I have to clean and vacuum my house a bit more and more thoroughly than I used to.

But that is pretty much it. I used to take claritin only in allergy season but now I take it year round. I also take rhinocort but I always did.

let us know if you decide to get a Hav.

My boys are allergic toe everything! No problems with our Havs, that's what led us to this breed. I also wouldn't let the dog sleep in your bed because they can carry things on their fur from outside that might cause a reaction.

DH is extremely allergic cats/dogs/horses. We visited our sister who has a Hav and he was symptom free so we thought we found the breed that would work for us and it has. Our Hav often sleeps on our bed....on his side and he is still allergy free. Allergy free and a delight to own (when the little poop isn't peeing on the rug....grrr...another thread). A perfect combination for us.

I know some here still have symptoms with their Havs but not as extreme as other breeds. There is no guarantee.

Hi, I am extremely allergic to dogs, cats, rabbits and more. I have absolutely no problem at all with my Hav. I think a Hav would be a great choice.

I think everyone is different, but my husband is VERY allergic to dogs, cats and pollen. He still goes for a cortizone shot every year in May to deal with the pollen. He has had no reaction at all to Baxter. These dogs truly do not shed. I have yet to find a dog hair anywhere in the house. If you can keep up with the grooming (we do Baxter in a teddy bear puppy cut every 8 weeks) I think Hav's are the perfect hypoallergenic pet!
