I, personally, wouldn't let mine chew on pinecones. However, you don't want to make a game out of it. In "Puppies for Dummies," they explain how when you get everyone in the household chasing after the dog, he thinks to himself, "Wow, whatever I have must be REALLY good- they all want it!" When Frosty has something I don't want him to have, I just calmly walk after him until he's in close enough range that I can get a hand on him to catch him. Now when he knows he has something he's not supposed to, if he sees me coming toward him, he'll just bring it to me and drop it (most of the time). I think the big thing is to not make it a game.
