Had a scary & yucky experience...HELP!

I apologize in advance for the gross nature of this post.

Last night Daisy was acting strange. She kept circling and seemed like her back end was bothering her. She had been outside and had snow on her so I just thought it was stuck to her legs or something. Then she started yelping and trying to bite at her back end. Here comes the gross part...sorry! She had poop stuck coming out of her butt. We put her in a bath and my husband kept dousing it with warm water while I held her. It looked awful. Her butt hole looked like it was pushing out & the poop was stuck coming out. Once it was wet I could see their was hair around it. I tried pulling but it made her yelp. I didn't know if I should take her to the vet, but the emergency vet is about 40 mins away as we live in a rural area. So I started gently massaging her butt to relax it and started pulling a little bit of poop out of the hair at a time. After it softened from the water I managed to get it all out. (With a lot of EWWWW's in between). Then I bathed her & dried her. Her bum was really red so I put a bit of Vaseline on it & trimmed the hair all around the hole. Afterward she was exhausted from the trauma and so was I.

Again, I am so sorry for the gross description but I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this? I've never had a small, or long haired dog before. Will keeping her hair trimmed there help? Is there anything else I should have done or anything I should have been watching for? I feel like a terrible Mother after she had to go through this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I went to the pet store this morning & got her a lovely new toy to make us both feel better

Thanks,
Nancy

Ha! Well, I'm sure she has forgiven you! . Yes, it is very important to keep the hair right around her anus trimmed back a bit, AND to make sure that that area is COMPLETLEY combed out every day. As you can see, a little mat can cause a BIG problem in the wrong place!

You aren't the only person to have needed to do a "butt bath", and it probably won't be the last time, but hopefully not for this reason again! As long as their hair is clean, non-matted, and trimmed back a bit, it is unusual for poop to get stuck unless they have loose stools.

Do you think Daisy is constipated? If so, you should ensure sure she's getting enough water and exercise, and you might want to add a little pumpkin (containing no sugar or spices) to her diet.

And don't worry, we've all had to give our Havs a butt bath and pulled stuff out of their hineys a time or two.

Most of the time things come out all right but sometimes a little help is necessary. You did all the right things!

Thanks for the help. I don't think she is constipated although she does seem to have trouble deciding where to go with all the snow we have. My hubby keeps shovelling a spot in the backyard so she has a flat space to go on. She seems to be fine now. I will be sure to keep an idea on her butt from now on & trim that hair The things we do for our babies!

One of our smaller dogs does that sometimes and she has short hair. It scares her silly and she runs (like she can outrun it) and then sits for a minute. You can see the horrified look on her face (she is very fastidious). Hubby usually fixes her up from her "dingleberries."
