What does it TAKE to own a Hav?

Owning a Hav is a dedication on one's life. I want to know what did it take on your part to own a Hav. What have you learned? What did you learn about yourself?

For me....

I built more patience.

Owning a puppy is 24/7!

I have never been so busy in my life! Taking care of newborn/toddlers was easier!

I learned doing housework can really WAIT!

I learned not to be upset about accidents in the house because that is what puppies do! And, I learned, just clean it up!

I am the PLAYMATE!

I learned not to be upset about toys all over the living room.

I learned not to be upset with grass, twigs, and sticks all over the carpet!

I learned, I can get off my chair and go outside every 45 minutes! I sure did need the exercise!

I learned a tired dog is a GOOD dog.

I learned that schedules are important for Dexter!

I learned to take Dexter outside to potty when I thought he needed to go potty!

I love having something to do!

Don't depend on your dh to provide lots of care/training/playing for the puppy, unless you are one of the lucky ones! But, be sure that dh is ok with a new puppy in the house and dh will provide some help when needed.

I learned vacations have to be changed if you want to include your Hav!

I learned from Dexter just sitting outside and doing NOTHING is ok!

I want to hear from everyone! What does it take to own that precious little Hav (s) of yours?

I agree with all of your posts, Linda!! It does take a lot, but it's a labor of love for me. I have a problem with rocks to! Lucy drags in big giant rocks!

I love this old article about what I learned from my dog>

--All I Really Need To Know I Learned From My Dog

--Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

--When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

--Take naps and stretch before rising.

--Run, romp, and play daily.

--Be loyal.

--Never pretend to be something you're not.

--Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.

--If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

--When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

--Thrive on affection and let people touch you - enjoy back rubs and pats on your neck.

--When you leave your yard, make it an adventure.

--Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

--No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout - run right back and make friends.

--Bond with your pack.

--On cold nights, curl up in front of a crackling fire.

--When you're excited, speak up.

--When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

--Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

I learned that I could train my puppy. I was so worried about that.

I learned that RLH is the most joyous time of my day. Murphy never fails to make me laugh out loud when he is chasing through the house!

I learned that toilet paper is good for more than it's intended use.

I learned that Havanese are more adorable, happy, and outgoing than the articles that I read could express.

I learned that my cat Boo likes to play RLH too, but my cat Lily would rather watch than participate!

And last but not least I learned that I have MHS and IWAP disorder.

Rory, I love that poem and have it on our office wall! The boys have taught me everything you wrote Linda, but they also taught me how to live once again and to realize I can push myself and push myself some more and eventually I may be able to do what I thought I could not. Yet, they taught me if I cannot that, it is okay too, for their love is unconditional. They have taught me to laugh all over again. They also taught me I am a little whacky in the head …… for what person in their right mind would get two puppies at the same time???? And lastly they have lead me to this forum. People who belong to this forum are so amazing and never cease to surprise me with their capacity for goodness.

Oh Lord, don't let me once forget
How much I love my trusty pet.
Help me learn to disregard
The canine craters in my yard.
Show me how to be a buddy
Even when my sofa's muddy!
Don't allow my pooch to munch
Those postal workers for his lunch.
Shield my neighbor's cat from view
And guide my steps around the poo.
Train me not to curse and scowl
When it's puppy's night to howl.
Grant I shan't awake in fear
With a cold nose in my ear.
Give me patience without end.
Help me be my dog's "best friend".

One word-matts.
They are very challenging for me.
Butt baths are second.
Other than that, these dogs are pretty near perfect.
