Paw pads on hot concrete

I usually walk the dogs after work somewhere around 6 - 7 p.m. With the recent tragedy of an attack while walking, it has really made our walks less enjoyable because I am always so vilagent about our surrondings. Ideally I would love to walk the dogs mid-day when there is less dog activity around the neighborhood. In the summer the concrete is so hot and worry that it has got to burn their paw pads. Valid concern? Or can their feet handle this?

hot pavement

We were out once at the Pasadena Holistic Pet Fair. It was hot for Southern California. They had these big pools for drinking water, but the dogs were all jumping in it...so we all realized that their paws were burning. I carried Riki and sweat like crazy but when I put my own foot down, I realized it was really bad.

Black pavement is the worst, I don't find the sidewalks to be so bad. Is there a park where you can walk on the grass?

REI sells these little puppy booties that dogs can wear. That day at the fair they were selling like crazy.

Dogs don't complain so you never know...but again your own foot test will tell you. A dog naturally would be running in the woods not black top.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

I wish morning walks were an option for me. Unfortunately my busiest time of day.

Watch out for hot sand as well when you bring them to the beach.

You can tell when it's too hot for them - they'll either be pulling (and REALLY pulling) towards shade or they'll do a sort of jump-skip while walking. I've walked them in 90 degree weather with no problems, but if it's incredibly hot I tend to stick to shade.

Thanks. It is cloudy today so we just came back from a walk at 11:45. The streets were pretty quiet. No dogs at all. We only have to cross the black pavement when we cross the streets but typically we walk on a concrete side walk. Almost no shade though.

It's not that I want to isolate them from dogs altogether but there are 2 questionable dogs in the neighborhood who walk at night. One frightens me to death and you can see his owning holding on with all his might when it encounters another dog.

This reminds me of the time I took Dexter to a pet shop to get some more dog food and I walked Dexter in.....there was a black on the outside of the door and Dexter was dancing around to get off of it, we tried it again and he did the same thing and Dexter kept looking at me. Then.....................I finally figured it out! I picked up Dexter and carried him in.
