In need of suggestions....

My Hav Jax used to love his ex-pen and I used to put him in it when we left. He would bark his head off and move the thing across the floor but when we were home he would go in there to sleep in his bed or play. He started climbing out of the expen and had a couple accidents on the floor so we decided on a crate since he has one upstairs for bed time. He WILL NOT go in the crate. He doesn't 'love' his crate like so many other pups I see or like be loved his expen.

When we leave and I tell him to go to bed he avoids me or runs the other way. He didn't used to do this with the expen. It's been 6 weeks with the crate now. This leads me to his other bad habit- sleeping on the nasty, muddy wet carpet and boot trays in front of my front door. He has a bed in the same general area. He has the shag carpet under the couch, he can sleep on the couch, but he will not stop sleeping on the wet dirty rug in front of my front door. With this 3 ft of snow sitting on my lawn and the very muddy spring we are sure to have when this all melts I need him to start sleeping in his crate or bed or any of the million other places he is welcome to sleep!
Please, any suggestions on both issues are welcome!!!!

Few dogs learn to "love" their crates on their own. It takes careful training, and that does NOT mean just putting them in the crate when you need them there. I highly recommend Susan Garrett's "Crate Games" DVD, which can be purchased on her "Say Yes" web site. Crate Games can be used for teaching many things, but if you only get through the first 3 lessons on the DVD, you'll have a dog who loves his crate!

As far as sleeping on the muddy mat, all I can say is gate him away from it. There is no accounting for how/why dogs choose the places they do to sleep. What is gross to us is lovely to them!!!

I'll check out the crate games. I don't put him in his crate just to put him there. He is in there with many toys, water bowl that attaches to the side, a bed and he always gets a 'special' treat for when I leave...which he many times does not eat until I get back. I work from home so the longest he has ever been crated during the day is 3 hours while I was away at a family gathering. At night he seems to go in his crate upstairs much better for bedtime and he has nothing in that crate but a bed and cozy blanket.
As for the wet entry way rug and boot trays I can't gate it off. Our house is an open floor plan and there isn't really a way to gate the entry rug and boot trays. You would think since he is so stinking intelligent that getting hit on the butt with the door when people walk in would be enough to move him.
