Motion Sickness

In October when we first got Sassy, on the way home (four hour drive) she got sick within the first 15 minutes. We pulled over cleaned up the mess because she was whimpering because of the mess. After the clean up, she seemed to do okay. We stopped every hour so she could walk around, after the third stop she got sick again. She was riding in a crate.

When we got home I went out and got her a seat for her. She was doing really well with the seat, she didn't get car sick. Then about six weeks later she started getting car sick. At first it was just occasionally now it's every time she rides (unless someone is holding her). I've tried giving her half a Dramamine, that seemed to work the first time. Then the next time I took her for a ride she got sick again. I really want to be able to take her with me so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any info.
Nadine

BTW I tried moving the seat up so she could see out. That didn't work, so I moved it further down with a pillow under it so there would be less bouncing and that didn't work either.

Have you tried taking her on many very short car rides?

I give my guys 1/2 tablet of Bonine, it works better than Dramamine. You have to give it to them at least 2 hours in advance.

Molly got car sick when we first got her. It would not happen every time but it happened alot. I never tried medicating her. I put a favorite toy in with her and I would talk to her to distract her. The good news is that she seems to have outgrown it. I always pack a clean blanket and paper towels just in case when we are in the car. Good luck.

Scout's breeder warned me he might get carsick on the way to the airport. Within a couple minutes he lost his breakfast. Thank goodness I was covered! He was about one year before tolerating riding any distance in the car. It did help to get a car seat so he could look out the window. He loves going for rides now

Yes, I've tried the short trips. She doesn't get sick on those, she just starts drooling.

I did the Dramamine an hour in advance. I'll try to find the Bonine. When we lived in Florida, I kept that on hand for visitors before we went out on the boat. However, haven't found it yet where we live.

Keep them short until she stops any signs of drooling (which is a sign of nausea) then SLOWLY increase the distances as she tolerates them better.
