Question Why is it?

Why is it that animals go to the people who just do not want to socialize with them?

It is obvious that Dexter would love to get to know my Mom better, because he constantly seeks her out. And..........Mom just does not know how to handle dogs. If anything, Dexter is going to learn the command "Off!"

Mom is getting frail and we cannot allow Dexter to jump on her legs, we don't allow Dexter to jump on us.

Any suggestions to make my Mom's visit tolerable?

Let Dexter sleep in bed with her at night. That way they'll get to know each other better......just kidding!

I'd love to know what you do. My sister really doesn't like dogs, she was bitten on the face when she was a teenager and has never wanted to be around dogs since. She's nice to mine and will greet them but hates when they jump on her or try to sit with her. I feel bad because she doesn't want to be mean, she just doesn't want anything to do with them. My guys greet her like they want to be her new BFF!

If my Mom would get to know Dexter...he would leave her alone. Dexter gravitates toward Mom every chance he gets......Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I would have no clue what to do. The jumping we just say down very firmly. If they are very excited it doesn't always work. To keep them away from someone who doesn't want to be bothered, I don't know how you would do that besides putting them in a room or crating them.

I remember this scenario when my brother visited. The dog "hater." It worked out because it was only for a day. But for an extended visit or like Ann, a frequent visiting family member, yeeks !!! I will follow this thread to see the recommendations of others.

What has everyone tried to keep your pup away from guests?

If it's an extended visit your visitor will have to participate in the 'non-dog person' training by giving the 'off' or 'no' command him or herself. You have to back it up by making sure your dog complies. Even if that means putting your dog on leash and strapping him to you for a while.

You could also set up an ex-pen for your pup while the visitor is there. It's not ideal, but it should be effective.

I hope it works out and that your mom has a nice and injury-free visit!

My dad has dementia so sometimes he just doesn't notice Abby with her paws on his knees or the arm of the chair but as soon as he does he pets her and then she is happy and goes off to something else.
