Thunder and Lightening

Hobbes has just recently become afraid of thunder and lightening. I'm not sure what happened. Maybe one of the days I was out we had a storm. This mornings storm was very loud and although we all stayed calm and don't make a fuss he was panicked. He couldn't find a place to stay, was in and out of every hiding place he could find. I tried to speak softly to him and he would only stare out the window waiting for the next flash and shaking. Should I give him something for it? Any thoughts? I guess my biggest worry is if I was out when the storm hits. If he's this freaked when we are all home what happens when we aren't?

As a puppy, my Beamer never even payed any attention to thunder storms. Then last year he seemed somewhat affraid and this year he is petrified! He kept us up real late last night because of a storm.. ughhhh.... Then he begged me to take him out at 3:30am since he did not go all evening because he was to scared.. lol

Dexter did the same thing, I took him outside and we watched the rain and heard the thunder. We stayed on the porch for about 5 minutes...Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....I am going to sound like a crazy dog lady now...... When the thunder occurred, I told Dexter that it was thunder, it's ok... and we listened to the rain. I did not baby Dexter when we were outside....No problems since.

Brady was not afraid of thunder as a puppy either. Then he was outside one day for a big thunder crash and he has been petrified since. We had a horrible storm here this morning and Brady was a mess. He just shakes and trembles. I try not to baby him and just stay with him and tell him it will be okay. I have thought about looking into medication for him, but I don't think I want to go that route yet. Growing up we had a golden retriever who would bark like crazy during storms. We used to give her tranquilizers if they predicting thunder and lightening. Sad part is, it rarely helped. She would bark and bark with her eyes almost in the back of her head from the pills.

So Linda now you want me to stand outside in the storm and talk to him. OK I'll give it a try. I'll owe you if it works.

Yes Karen that was the storm! He does seem fine when it stops but I feel so bad and if I was out I'd feel worse.

We had a horrible night here with three out of the four terrified by the terrible lightning storms. Every time I fell asleep again, one of them would wake me again.

Milo is also terrified by thunder and lightening. We try to make light of them, but he either wants to be in our lap or hiding in strange corners, like the bathroom.

I have the perfect solution: hire some construction workers to build a new subway system right in front of your house. Make sure they work on it every day for 2 years. I seriously think that's the only reason Kubrick and Hitch are so calm around strange noises. The storm last night made ME jump a couple of times and the two of them just slept right through it.

Of course since you probably can't (or won't) do that, you can always try to get those noises of thunder CDs and play them loudly every day and see if you pup gets used to them? Not sure if that's helpful, but it might work.
