Chico is afraid of the dog park.

A park for small dogs has just opened up in our town and we have taken our dogs a few times. chico just sniffs around and bugs Simone who likes to play fetch. Two days ago we took the dogs in and there about five other dogs playing around. Everything was fine until a couple brought their year old dog and three month old puppy in to play. The older dog took off after Chico barking and finally biting him. We tried to introduce the two dogs but Chco was chased again and bitten. The aggressor was much smaller than Chico but he was terrified. Now we can't get him to walk in and play. Night before last he came in and jumped onto a total strangers lap and when we removed him he slunk between my husbands legs with his bottom lip quivering. What do we do now? He tends to be a timid guy anyhow and takes his cues from Simone. The couple with the aggressive dog were horribly upset and took their dog home.

Quit taking him to the dog park! Seek out regular parks with no animals so you can exercise Chico. Havs are so small when they are pups, they are usually the smallest dogs there.
Dexter was afraid also and he became car sick after the visits to the dog park.

Actually, chico was the biggest dog there by far. He is about ten pounds and the rest of the dogs were six pounds and under.

Hobbes looks like a beast in the small dog park. The other owners look at me like I should be on the other side.

MacGyver was afraid at the dog park, too -- we only went once. He loves daycare, though. They put him in a small group with more low-key dogs and he has a great time. They gave us a picture of him playing with a boxer.

all indications from what I have read on this forum suggest you not bring him there.

I take Fipsy to a dog park, and she is very timid with other dogs - especially the big dogs.
I think they should have days for big dogs and days for small dogs, but they don't.

I have been taking there for the last 2 months and she is now getting better, but I have to tell you, when some of the big dogs come up to her, I get scared too.

There was one day when there were 5 big dogs around her and she was very scared. I picked her up and just started walking the other way.

I had one big dog come up to me one day and jump on me, and it frightened me too.

But, she loves going to the park now, and most of the time it is okay.

I honestly feel that some big dogs are just not trained enough by their owners, not to jump up,etc... but I love talking her somewhere where she can be free and run loose.

Sandi.

You can always screen the park before you get out of the car or go to the park when it is not too busy.

Poor Chico. I would avoid the dog park, too, because pretty soon he might be terrified of every dog he sees. Are there any friends or neighbors with nice calm dogs he can play with? Or maybe a good doggie daycare that's well supervised?

We have just come back from the dog park again and Chico was fine. We carried his crate in so he could deke in there if he felt threatened. He went into it a couple of times for a few moments and he observed new dogs from the safety of it.He played with an old friend who was visiting and was generally quite calm.he actually sniffed a timid little rat terrier's bum and all was well.
