Heartworm/flea medication

My groomer just told me that the flea/heartworm medication i give Django should be given every 45 days not 30. Has anyone heard this? We use Revolution, it's an all in one.

All the heartworm meds I know of are safe to give every 45 days AS LONG AS YOU DON'T FOGET. They suggest every 30 days to make sure people DON'T forget to give it in time. I mark my calendar and am very careful, so I go with the 45 day schedule, to expose Kodi to as little of the chemical as possible.

But I also don't give combination flea and heartworm meds. (because I never want to double up on chemicals) I don't know what the flea part is, how it works or how often it needs to be dosed to be effective.

I just recently restarted Revolution on Scout & Truffles. I just looked at the boxes from the vet and it says to give monthly

I do 45. I also mark my calendar and have it repeat each year. There's only one time it goes over 45 days and that's in the Feb. It is the dead of winter here so I don't worry about it going over by a few days. It's just easier for me to mark it once and have it repeat each year. which means there will be one month that is more than 45 days.

Mi Popi gives me Revolution every 30 days (I put a pop-up reminder on this computador to remind him). I have been using it since I was just a little puppy doggie with no side effects. I need to go to mi Vet to get updates on mi inoculations. I'm going to ask him if I can go for 45 days on Revolution.

Thanks for the feedback. I too have it on my calendar so we never miss a dose. I am going to call my vet as well. It would be great to add a few more days in between doses, I have giving it to him every month.

The boxes of ALL of them say monthly. But check with your vet. Most heartworm meds last 45 days.

I take Kodi off heartworm meds completely from Dec. through April or May, depending on the weather. (this year it might be August at the rate we're going!!! ) (only kidding on that) But that depends completely on where you live, and how warm it is.

with Django's health issues , you might want to consider a holistic approach. It is very effective . Here is a HVC quote " In fact, due to the length of time the immature heartworm spends in each larval stage, monthly heartworm preventatives are actually 100% effective if given every 45 days and 99% effective if given every 60 days.

"Every holistic vet I’ve consulted had concerns about the long-term safety of heartworm medications. Well-known vet, author and columnist Martin Goldstein wrote in his wonderful book The Nature of Animal Healing that he sees heartworms as less epidemic than the “disease-causing toxicity” of heartworm medicine" DNM
