Peeing in House after spaying??

Daisy was spayed two weeks ago. I brought her home the same day. As soon as she got in she went to the patio door and peed on the mat before I could open the door. I just thought she was still out of it from the aesthesia and didn't know she did it. This happened again the next day & I didn't really think anything of it. I just cleaned it up and said poor girl. Now here we are two weeks later and she is doing the same thing at least twice a day. She just did it 10 minutes ago and I let her out. She came back in & peed on the mat again! I have replaced the mat but it made no difference. She hasn't gone anywhere else in the house, only on the mat at the door, so it seems she just can't wait when she gets there. She has been totally housetrained since she was 4 1/2 months old and is 6 1/2 months now.

I think I will call the vet tomorrow, but just wondered if anyone has experienced this?

It's certainly worth a call to the vet, but this doesn't sound like spay incontinence if it only happens in one place. My guess is that this started because she was uncomfortable and, as you said, "out of it" on the first day or two, and has become a habit since then. Can you pick the mat up completely for a while so she doesn't have anything "convenient" to pee on there? Maybe that would break the cycle.

Thanks Karen. I did talk to the vet and they said we could start with a urine sample (easy for them to say) to rule out UTI. I will try to get one, but I would think if it was that she would be peeing elsewhere too.

I will definitely try taking the mat up completely and see how it goes.

Thank you for the suggestion!

If you can't get the urine sample, they definitely can do it at the vet's office.

She may just think it is more convenient to go on the mat. It took us awhile to train Truffles not to go on the mat outside the sliding door. We did remove for a few months before replacing it. She hasn't had anymore accidents on the mat. It's probably better to throw that mat out because the scent might continue to attract her.

I would definitely go without a mat in that spot. Now that it's a habit the mat probably prompts her to pee before she even has time to let you know she needs to go out. Even without the smell, the sight and feel of the mat might be prompting her. You know what it's like when you hear running water...

Update:
I took the mat up Wed. afternoon as you all suggested. She hasn't had one accident since then!

Thank you all! I am so glad I found this forum. I feel like I have a bunch of new friends and some great guidance for a first time Havanese (and small dog) owner.

P.S. I guess I won't have to figure out how to get a urine sample now, Thank Goodness!!!!!

Yay!!! I think having a puppy is like having babies and toddlers. You really DO need a support system!
