Took Rory for teeth cleaning today (photo)

I read Havs should have a teeth cleaning/dental exam yearly so I scheduled an appointment for Rory who is closing in on two years of age.

The veterinarian examined her teeth and gums and said her teeth were beautiful, that her raw diet and daily teeth brushings had held her in good stead, and she didn't need a cleaning at all.

So yay to the proponents here of a raw diet and daily brushings. And yay to the butchers at Golden Steer Choice Meats in Bellevue for those nice bones.

Below, she's a little wary of being at the vet's.

Way to go Rory!! What a cute picture of the little princess; she's so over the vet. LOL.

I'm going to have to check out that butcher as it's only a mile from my work. Thanks Gary!

Hi Jeanne, that shop will cut bones to size for Emmie too; you can just say give me $20 worth of 4-inch marrow (or whatever) bones! (I understand marrow bones might not be right for every dog.)

I overdid it with marrow bones for my lab and now his teeth are worn down. That being said the vet has never wanted to clean his teeth and he's ten...so there you go! I think the bones are great in moderation, just dont let your dog push you around the way mine did lol. My lab was an addict...

I had noted previous threads and comments about marrow bones. They work for Rory because she's very casual about them. My German Shepherd was serious about hers and gnawed them aggressively. She might have worn her teeth down were the bones not picked up after a short time.

Rory's default chew is the extra-small Kong. I fill them with a variation of a recipe the Canadian Havanese Fanciers published; mine uses baby food or peanut butter, blueberries, and Real Meat® air-dried dog food. I freeze them for storage and with the hope they'll last longer as she chews on them.
