Anyone using Nexgard for fleas and ticks

My friend works for a conservative vet who recommends Nexgard for fleas and ticks. I just called my vet to see what he's been recommending since Frontline isn't working that well. He is also recommending Nexgard. It is made by frontline but it is a chewable. The thing that scares me is it is new.....

My guys are still on Frontline plus along with the Preventic Collar. I cringe overtime I give them these poisons

I don't think I could use a feed-though poison.

Here's some info I found on the main ingredient:

https://www.vetstream.com/canis/Cont...neric/gen00893

One thing I don't like is that the fleas and ticks need to bite the animal for it to work, and with ticks, it is only 90% effective killing ticks within 48 hours of attachment. That's easily long enough for the dog to get Lyme. I'd rather just go over them carefully and remove any ticks I find…. I'm sure I've NEVER left a tick on Kodi for 24 hours, let alone 48!

Not wild about the side effect profile listed either.

Thanks Karen! What are you using these days for fleas and ticks?

I started using Revolution again since we found two ticks on Scout within a few weeks. The groomer found a couple fleas also. It causes Scout's coat to mat, but it is more important to keep the ticks off of them since Lyme is in our area. It seems to be working the last month.

Still using Advantix, as infrequently as I can get away with it. I really need something that REPELS ticks, because Kodi reacts so badly to the bite itself. (doesn't matter what kind of tick, or whether it's carrying a disease, it is the actual bite. He gets a hard lump that lasts for months, and then the hair falls out. If I'm lucky, the hair will grow back in a white streak. (he looks like Cruella DeVille ) When I missed a couple when he was younger, and they were on him just a few more hours (because I've ALWAYS checked him carefully before bed time) the hair fell out and he's had a permanent bald spot there. He's got two of those on his head, even though you can't see them unless you hunt through his long hair.

I think the Preventic collars also repel, but you've got to leave them on the dog all the time, if I understand correctly. And since he is in long coat, an all-the-time collar isn't an option.

I really think the BEST "tick protection" is careful tick checks, just like with people. Knock on wood, he'll be 6 at the end of April (STILL can't believe that!!!) and he's still negative for Lyme. Most dogs in our area have seroconverted by the time they're 3. I must be doing something right!

It would be easier for people to find it if you put the link in your post!

I wish my guys could use Advantix. I used that for months but then my boys got a very bad reaction to it.
