Question about coat color changes

I've noticed this past week that Baxter's brown patches are fading lighter. I know that chocolates in particular do fade, but I am wondering if the sun might have something to do with it? He'll be a year old, so it might just be natural fading, but we have been outside a LOT this month, so I was just curious if that could be a factor. If so, will it darken back up? Maybe? Possibly? I love those chocolately brown patches!

I'm not sure if he will darken back up. My little Harley is black and white and his black is fading and his white is turning black. Go figure!

If you're anything like me, you'll love each color change as it comes. They are just wonderful and beautiful in each and every stage they go through. My Bailey has changed tremendously and I loved his coloring as a puppy, but I think he's at least as beautiful now as he was then. And if he's not, please don't tell me.

Oh, Bailey is beautiful no matter what!
I just have a feeling this is sunbleaching, because it's mostly where the sun hits it---on the top layers.... If that is indeed the case, it'll grow back his regular color right? (I know, it's a silly question...)!!

Does anyone use sunscreen on their dogs?

Joanne, I've wondered the same about the sun's effect. Tucker was black and white as a puppy, and now shifts between pewter-silver and charcoal gray, back and forth, also depending on the lighting. I figured by the end of this summer I'll be able to tell if it is sun related. He's 2, and I've not pegged it down, yet.

The coat changes appear to be ongoing. Even with Milo who's coat is still mostly black (where it was) has gray roots in places. The biggest change with him has been his face. Last year he went very red, which faded to his former cream color and then back again. It's fascinating to watch.

I doubt it's the sun. You might even see his puppy color back when he's around 6 or 7. You just never know.

Hi Joanne! No matter what, Baxter is absolutely adorable! I love the length of his hair in his pic by the way! Just curious as I'm new to this whole Hav thing.. did you get it cut like that or is that a pic of it simply growing out?

Thanks! No, this is the cut we keep him in. We have a large fenced in yard, 3 kids, and take him to the 'valley' (Cleveland metropark trails) often.... Our lifestyle doesn't fit with a long coat (we tried it briefly and he was a muddy, leaves stuck in everywhere mess by the end of the day! LOL) I take him to Petco, and brought some pictures showing how I wanted his face to look. The first groomer didn't quite get it (cut him more like a shnauzer.) the second groomer nailed it---exactly what I wanted: A round teddy bear looking face (rounded around his muzzle.) We have him groomed every 8 weeks. We bathe him once a week and use the coat handlers conditioner on him. I am embarrassed to say that we never brush him (I actually don't like the way he looks all brushed out. His hair has a natural kinky wave to it that I like better.... kind of looks like little dreadlocks on top of his head--lol) , but because we give him regular baths, keep him relatively short, and keep up with the grooming, he does not get matted. I was very worried about the whole 'coat' thing when we were first deciding on a hav, but it has proved not to be a big deal at all. I love him in his teddy bear cut! However, when I see the hav's here on the board with longer coats it makes me want to grow it longer and spend the time brushing him in the winter when he's not out and about in the mud so much.

Thanks for the info on coloring everyone.... I have to say I'm a bit sad to see his dark chocolate spots fade, but it'll be fun to see the changes over the years!
