Havanese + Camping + Rain = :(

I have tried a harness (lots of mats) and a collar (fewer mats, but I worry about her neck), with my 10 month old Havanese, Lola. She got SO many mats on her neck! Following every walk was an hour-long brushing session. What is the best harness or collar for the fewest mats?

Welcome to the forum. I'm in Kirkland, WA so I understand the concern about wet weather and mats. Some of us here feel the SENSE-ation® Dog Harness is one of the best choices because there is relatively little surface contact with the dog's coat.

You probably want a raincoat or jacket of some sort; although they can pose their own set of issues insofar as mats are concerned, but on whole they are your friend in bad weather.

A spray detangler is a great help too. I personally use ShowSheen® Hair Polish & Detangler which is marketed to horse owners but excellent for dogs.

Best of luck and let us know when you're in the Seattle area - there are a bunch of us here.

I have been using Cowboy Magic on Sheba to help keep mats from forming. I rub a dollop of it into her coat after her baths. It seems to help a little more when I rub it in after I have dried her.

Yeah, unfortunately, we can try to minimize matting as much as possible, but while they're blowing coat, it seems that ANYTHING touching them is going to cause mats!
