Baxter ate rat poison!

What a weekend. We traveled out of state to attend a wedding and stayed with my folks. It was the first time we have ever brought Baxter, so I was a bit nervous how it would all go. He was a dream in the car---slept the whole ride there (5 hours), and did really well at their house. My dad has a really large backyard and Baxter was just loving it. Well, unbenounced to me, my father had put down a thing of rat poison in the backyard because the chipmunks eat his flowers.... Baxter found it, and thankfully my husband saw him put something in his mouth and quickly got it out. I called the vet (I wasn't sure if he had injested any since it did crumble a bit when he removed it from his mouth) and she said to take him in. This is 2 hours before we were supposed to be at the wedding (which my children were IN and I was playing a piano piece....we could not NOT be there.) We quickly brought him in, and they gave him something to make him throw up. He had to stay there for 4 hours while they kept an eye on him, and then prescribed vitamin K for 2 weeks to counteract any of the poison just in case. I was a nervous wreck the entire ceremony, and I felt absolutely horrible that he had to be left in a strange place, throwing up---after he had already had so many changes that weekend (and was doing so well.) It took so long for Baxter to really come out of his shell completely and just be joyful, trusting and comfortable..... and he has finally over the past month gotten totally to that point. When I picked him up from the vet I felt like we were going to take a step backward. Today he is much more like himself, and I suppose I worried for nothing..... although, he is keeping me in his sight at all times it seems.

I know I shouldn't be mad at my dad---He really had forgotten that he had even put it there. But I am a bit annoyed at him nonetheless. The SCARY thing is, is that there were times we had let Baxter run around the back and just sat up on the deck talking/watching him.... but not up close. He could have easily injested that piece of poison and I would have been none the wiser. We might have never even known what had happened weeks later when he started showing symptoms and by then it would have been too late. Definitely something to keep in mind when you are visiting friends.... it might not be something they even think about at the time.

Just thought I'd post this link: Informative regarding signs to watch for and what you can do. I'm fairly new to the board, so if this has been covered, forgive me

Oh my - that is so scary. Thank goodness your husband saw him and maybe got most of it out of his mouth. Poor little guy.

Holy cow!!
I'm soo happy that Baxter is ok-it could have ended up a tragic situation.
I saw an episode of Emergency Vet on A/P where a young couple's American Bulldog did eat rat poisoning and passed away from it. It was hard to watch. Thank goodness your hubby was on guard. That stuff is really dangerous to have laying around anywhere. I hope Baxter feels better.

Thank you for the information and happy to hear your pooch was saved. Rat poison is not a good pesticide for so many reasons, not just the risk for dogs and cats but the rats themselves die a cruel death and their bodies often rot in people's basements or walls etc. causing more problems.

OMG that is terrifying. Thankfully it happened the way it did. Many years ago my disgusting neighbor's kids threw a box of rat poison in the back of my yard. I didn't see it for the longest time. By the time I discovered it, it had killed a magnificent tree I had at the back corner of my yard.

Oh, my goodness! I'm so glad your husband saw, and you got him to the vet. I hope he bounces back fast!

Wow, you must have been so scared and stressed, especially being so close to the wedding. Glad Baxter is okay and everything worked out okay.
