Question Therapy Dogs

Hi,

Does anyone use their dog as a therapy dog? If so, how do they become a therapy dog? Do they have to be certified to do this?

I don't even have my dog yet, but thought that might be a fun and rewarding thing to do with him.

Susan,

Thanks for responding. I hope that person sees my post. Hey, I'm glad you heard about that group in your area. That might be a good way to help with your disappointment and may also be a path to getting that new little girl, too.
Best wishes.

Thanks Susan for welcoming me. I've certainly enjoyed it so far. Lots of experience and good advice on here. I'm sure I'll be on it all the time when I get my puppy. I haven't had a dog for 15 years. I thought doing therapy with the dog might be fun. I know some dogs really like"working", but I don't know about the Hav's. I just know that they are really smart, so thought it might work well for them.

Yes, you usually do have to be certified to be a Therapy dog. You may have to go thru basic training classes & Canine Good Citizen test. They usually have their temperment tested before they are even considered. The dog will be put in different situations, like very busy & stressful environments to see how they handle it. It may be different requirements where you live. I would check with a local trainer or facility to see.

Susan,

I am hoping to get him this fall. I am checking with breeders in my area to see if they are planning litters for then. I would like to get one NOW, but we have a house to sell and th $$$ for the puppy will come out of that. If the house isn't sold by then, I'll have to borrow from my sis! It's hard to be patient. I want puppy hugs and kisses now! But this will give me time to not act on impulse and really look at breeders.

Yes, I was thinking about nursing home and maybe even children's hospital visits.

I think the training experience would be good.

Shannon,

Thanks for the advice. I'm in kind of a small town, but I'll have to do some checking. I'm sure one of the larger communities near us will offer that type of training if I can't find it here. I'll check into it.
