Whining at other dog

I've been dogsitting for the last few days and today Lucky started paying attention to the other dog, but in a way that's kind of different. Lucky is super gentle with the puppy (Snickers). Snickers will jump on Lucky and bite him but Lucky doesn't do anything....maybe just a small "warning bark" at the most, but he has never snipped at Snickers. Today Lucky got excited when Snickers started running around the house so Lucky started chasing him and kind of playing with him. I was very careful and watched Lucky's behavior and during the entire time Lucky's ears were up and alert and his tail was up in the air. But the strange thing was that Lucky let out these pitiful whines...it sounded like he was being beaten. I had no idea what to think so used a very calm voice telling Lucky he was "a good boy" and they kept semi-playing, but the whining made me so nervous I had to stop them. (When I say "semi-playing I mean that Snickers would run around the house and kind of tease Lucky and jump under a table where Lucky couldn't get...but Lucky was chasing after him).

Does anyone know what this means? Should I not let them play?* I don't know if it's related, but Lucky lets out the same kind of whine we he sees another dog when I am walking him. Lucky's a rescue dog and I wonder if it's that he wants to play with the dogs but he's not sure how to.

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like it's how Lucky plays, he might just be vocal when he plays. Izzy will sit in front of her toy and whine when she wants us to play with her.

I couldn't get a good video of thme playing...they stopped right where Lucky would chase her aound the house. And yes, all of the barking is from Lucky, not the puppy.

This link will take you to the video.

I am not an expert, but Lucky looks pretty happy in the video. Dugan will sometimes let out little whine/bark like that when he wants Brady to come and get him. I would think if Lucky was unhappy about any of this, he would run to you for help. If he is actively participating in the playing, I wouldn't worry too much.

I think you are right...he's trying to learn how to play with another puppy again. I've got to brag (again) but he has been so gentle with these sharp puppy teeth that I witness attack his manhood and he didn't even flinch. A few more playdates with my Dallas buddies and hopefully we can get him better solicalized.

Any other advice? I just want to make sure he is a happy, healthy dog.

He does look like he is doing great with that puppy. If he was never exposed to playing before, it will take some time, but he should learn. My mom's hav, Bacca, is a retired show dog. He is actually still very young (under 2 years old) but he didn't know how to play when she got him in January. We suspect he was so busy showing with a handler and stuff that he never got to be a true puppy. He was treated well, but just had a different puppyhood. He looked at my dogs who ran in the yard to get the ball and chased toys like they were crazy. Now, he is the first one to chase the ball and the 3 boys all play hard together all the time when he is here. He now loves toys too. Mom had gotten a bunch of toys when she first got him and told me he didn't like toys. It took a few months, but he is all about toys now. I think through exposure to playing and other dogs, Lucky will learn all the joys dogs should have in life.

Looks like Lucky is doing good!

Dexter has be whining/crying when we see our new next door neighbor's puppy. We are getting close to the fence, but I am not pushing it. I think Dexter is afraid of the puppy or he doesn't know what it is.....puppy makes lots of noise (wanting attention) when he sees us walking, so I pet the puppy and let Dexter know it is ok, tell him he is a good boy.

Yesterday, we got about 3 feet from the puppy! This is better than at least 25-30 feet. We are working on it.
